With all this discussion about the dealer using the wrong amount for an oil change, I decided last night to check the oil level (200 miles on the vehicle), sure enough it is overfilled where it slightly exceeds the the top range mark of the dips stick (cold engine). I will remove some of the oil before driving it again.

my dealer did the same , I just do not care anymore , if this vehicle fails me I will dump it and get Toyota : )

The Wave program is awesome and very generous (wrong word, some similar letters though) DANGEROUS, is the word you were looking for. You get an extra quart of oil with every service!
Close ;)

I've seen others post this and I fully subscribe to it. I can't afford their 'free' oil changes......

My first Jeep Wave oil change went like this.

I walk in to the "Express Lane" (not really express, as in fast, but that's another story) oil change office and tell Ms. Oilchange (Lisa as it turns out) that I want one of my Jeep Wave oil changes on my Wrangler. She's a little cranky at first but ends up being quite pleasant and has a good sense of humor. I tell her "Please write on the paperwork that the JL 3.6L engine takes 5 quarts of oil, not the 6 quarts that the JK 3.6L takes" to which she replies "Are you sure? Those guys know what they're doing back there" to which I replied "Yes I'm sure, it's common issue on the Jeep forums". So she obliges and writes "5 qts only" on the paperwork. Right before she takes the paperwork back to the service area I ask her again to highlight the 5 quarts so she takes a highlighter and basically makes it look like she crossed out the "5 qts only". :swear: So then I'm outside on the phone and I see one of the techs get in my Jeep and pull her in to the bay. I intercept him in the office and I asked him "How many quarts of oil does the JL engine take?" to which he replies "Depends on which engine" to which I reply "The 3.6L" and he says "I think it takes 6 quarts" to which I reply "No, it takes 5 quarts" to which he replies "Oh, well we always check the computer anyway, but I'll make sure." About a half hour later they pull my Jeep out of the bay. So I go over to Ms. Oilchange (Lisa still) to be checked out and I ask her "How many quarts of oil did they put in?" So she looks on her computer and I guess they hadn't finished inputting their service "stories" so she goes out to the service area and comes back in with a quart of 0w20 motor oil in her hand and says "Yeah, they only put 5 quarts in but FCA's system still says to put in 6 quarts for the JL Wrangler 3.6L engine, I have to credit this back to FCA" and then she says "Thanks for telling us about that, it avoids a lot of problems" to which I replied "Yeah, I don't like to be the a-hole but it's a very common issue."

Dipstick showed right at the full mark. So by all means, be an a-hole when you go to the dealership for an oil change.

You're too hard on yourself Steve. We are not assholes in life when we make a point to people, supposedly the most uniquely qualified to service our vehciles, to simply do things--not brilliantly--but correctly..competently, especially when history suggests that it's a notorious place where things get screwed up.

Dare I say that you were too nice. I might have come into the dealership with this song queued on my smart phone...better, done the song's dance myself if incensed enough.

Question though, in your last sentence when you say "Dipstick" were you referring to a device for measuring oil content or a moron? ;)

around my oil intake that says, "5 quarts not 6 of oil"

You'll pardon me, I have to go outside now and add the phrase

", you moron" to the tag.;)

(Jokes aside my dealer got it correct but I too made them write it on the work order.)

If you are checking it stone cold it will be up at that level as it obviously has all drained back into the pan. Not excessively above but near the top.

I hear this Winchell and agree. In short you feel onus lies on the Warrantor to prove owner negligence, all while proof positive by said owner that this isn't the case is good pratice. :)
Yes, that was a much more concise way to word it.

As for the dealerships overfilling. Yeah it does seem to be a common issue. I've had 2 of the free oil changes done, and they did it just fine (although slower than molasses in January). No issues with volume though and I didn't have to tell them about it. I wonder why some dealerships are having such a hard time with this?

Well, you can be firm but polite. The a-hole comment to her was more of a rhetorical admission. ;)

Agreed. I should have stated that the "number 5 dance" comes AFTER you've been firm and polite and clear with reasonable requests, and still haven't gotten through to people.

I concur that relationships should begin with decency, and that I hope they remain that way, and do when on my part when competency is met.

Same issue. I have changed oil at the dealer 4 times. Every time I have told them about the 5qt not 6qt. Every time they add 6 no matter how I tell them. They even write it on the request. Every si how time I have to extract 1 qt. This is unbelievable. I wonder if this causes any engine damage. I am sure most people don’t even pay attention to this.

I had my last Jeep Wave oil change and they have only over filled mine once and that was the first time, after that I stood by the bay and told him 5 qts and then checked it before I left and had no issues, so I got all my free ones without to much of an issue other than they still think the JL is like the JK but now that it’s done I can do my own

Just ask @cosine he knows!
is your dealer not doing 5-20 as far as I know that only comes in full synthetic
Hope not, 0w-20 is what the V6 calls for and this is only available in full synthetic that I'm aware of.

If the 2.0 turbo takes a 5w-20 then that's a possibility though.

But seriously, the V6 is the EASIEST DIY oil change you can do, unless you just hate doing anything involving a wrench, or live at a place where they won't allow this, it's 15 minutes, and you'll know it's not f'd up :)

Going to the dealer, waiting, then hoping it's all correct isn't "FREE", the $30 a DIY job costs is a bargain in comparison to me.
