I am a new Colorado resident. I was surprised to see 86 octane at the pump on my way here. Google suggests that 85 octane is also sold.

im thinking that I need to stick with 87 octane for my 3.6L per Jeep. Thoughts?

that's crazy, I don't think I've seen or at least noticed 86 down here in C. Springs. I've used both 85, 87 & 91 and honestly I didn't notice anything really different maybe some mileage change but nothing worth a full switch. I stick with 87 due to Jeep's recommendations.

I noticed it at my last fill-up (rural area south of CO springs) on my drive from Texas. Haven’t been to a station in Denver yet.

thanks for the 87 confirmation. I will stick with that.

Also, Welcome. It seems like everyone is moving up here from Texas. You're the 3rd person in the last couple weeks that have moved here.

Funny......

in Houston, I could name you a half dozen folks that I have met in the last 3 months who moved FROM Denver. (All of them miss Denver).

I’m thinking that with the oil connection, the two cities have a lot of ā€œmovementā€ between them.

Some of the "mountain" states--CO, WY, MT, and ID typically have 85 or 85.5 octane as "regular". I have been traveling through those states for decades and have always seen it. I was told it is due to the altitude in those states that cause 85/85.5 to work as 87 does in lower elevations.

Google confirms your statements. I was just unaware. I will stick with 87 as Jeep requires.

I drove a Sahara with the 2.0T from Houston to Sheridan and back on 85/85.5/87 octane for the whole trip and there was no pinging or loss of power. The Jeep was stuffed to the max (but was not towing), never had a problem, averaged 23.6MPG, with an average speed of 62MPH over 3,186 miles. I never saw a need to use higher octane, but of course, that does not mean it will never be needed. From my point of view, modern engine control systems are robust and flexible enough to compensate for a myriad of conditions.

I agree, if that is what is actually happening. I do not think it was (in my case) simply due to the MPG. Would I have had better than 23.6MPG with 89 or 92 octane? I am skeptical.

Thanks folks. Lots of good info that for me just comes down to ā€œstick with 87ā€...... I’ll do that.

and, I have confirmed that the trip that I had planned for next week to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal is a good one......

ā€˜ā€™thanks!
