I'm about to clean my engine bag since it's never been done. Do I need to cover my alternator somehow. If so, where is it because I can't even see it. Does it really need to be covered since it's not exposed? Has anyone already done this? Please don't move this to another thread, which is basically the kiss of death.

If you don't have an alternator, it is probably because your engine is an eTorque. Light washing is ok. I wouldn't go at it with a pressure washer. The air box opening is about the only thing to keep the water out of. When I am done, I always dry it off with a leaf blower.

The engine bay is designed to get wet. Tires splash, rain comes through the grille, and water gets forded. However none of these occur at 1000+ PSI so don't use a pressure washer. Light rinsing only.

I've been using a pressure washer for years. Just don't go at it full blast. Back up a foot or two.

Yes for the leaf blower too.

I spray everything down with this, wait about 5-10 minutes, then rinse with no more pressure than an open garden hose. Comes out perfect every time.

I just use a damp microfiber cloth. if there are areas that require degreaser I will use brake cleaner or parts cleaner on a rag.

I cover my battery and fuse box. First time I didn’t, and something got wet that blew my compressor fuse when I went to air the tires.

I like Vinman's Simple Green or UncleArt's Dawn ideas, BUT, I just wouldn't use tire shine at the end. It just seems like your engine bay would get dirtier, quicker.

In fact, I've never understood why anyone uses tire shine (e.g., ArmorAll) even on their tires, even if they live in a low dust area. ArmorAll makes your tires look like they're made of plastic, not rubber, just like those tires on the 1:25 model cars I made when I was a kid. Nothing looks better on a vehicle than the natural matte finish of clean, black rubber.....period! (IM[no so]HO) ;)

depending on your level of OCD and how clean you want to make it...

Follow this method by Yvan Lacroix. this dude is a lagend in detailing world.

pick your own product or buy from them, whatever, they all do pretty much the same thing.
