Ordering the RK 3.5" Lift and choosing shocks but had a quick question. RK Recommends:
  • Front Shock Length – 17.8” Collapsed/ 29.3” Maximum Extended
  • Rear Shock Length – 18.3” Collapsed/ 30.3” Maximum Extended
Am I correct to assume I'd rather have a little bit too much shock than too little? Example:

Fox 2.0 3.5" - 4" Front Shocks : Collapsed Length: 17.80in / Extended Length: 28.40in
In this example, would I be losing a full inch of possible down travel?

Versus:

Fox 2.0 4.5" - 6" Front Shocks: Collapsed Length: 18.40in / Extended Length: 30.00in
Where as here, I have 7/10's of an inch extra on either end? I understand I may not be fully utilizing the entirety of the shock.

I could be wrong (learning this stuff myself), but I believe you want the collapsed length to be less than or equal to the recommendation, or you need to get longer bump stops to keep from bottoming out the shock.

This explains it some.

The triple rate springs will stay seated for the Fox 2.0 IFP Performance 4.5-6” shocks, but if you go with the 2.0 remote resi 4.5-6” shocks then you’ll have to run limit strap especially in the rear……

If you go with the 4.5-6 then definitely cycle the suspension without the coils to set up bump stops, don’t rely on recommended bumps in the instructions or on the web…..this is very important…otherwise you could damage the shock……

We put together a helpful article that may clear this up:

A longer travel shock is not always a good thing. Losing up travel can hurt ride quality and too long of a shock can cause other issues with binding or springs coming loose.
