When we went to Moab a few weeks ago for EJS we ran the jeeps with doors off and @Rotsam had his top off. We came home and began clean up on them almost immediately, but yesterday was the first day we had to just piddle around with stuff, so he decided he’d change out our cabin air filters, as the jeeps smelt straight up like sand (They are still brand new, so still smell like new car inside normally). I decided to film him changing them out, and it took him under 2 minutes to do so, and now my car doesn’t smell like sand, lol.

When I saw him flip it upside down over the floor, I had a good laugh. If that were mine, the dirt would have been in a pile on the floor and seat.

Looks like my shop vac filter. I’m going to say you got your moneys worth out of that filter and could shorten your service interval just slightly.

That was the OE filter I removed in Sept of last year after the AC quit blowing 🤣 A couple weeks ago, I was getting ready for a trip to AZ with my wife and it was forecast to be in the 80s in Phoenix. I figured I'd better check the cabin filter, since I had run many trails, including a 300+ mile trip on the dirt trails of the Mojave, since those pix of the filter above from Sept of last year. Sure enough, it was pretty bad. I couldn't find a filter right before we left, so I blew it out with air and re-installed it. Same with the engine air filter. You just have to be careful about blowing holes in them. Which reminds me, I need to order some filters.

I saw all the sand fly out when he flipped it on the video, but didn’t notice it IRL. Luckily it wasn’t really that bad but yeah- yours would have left a mountain, lol.

I work in a Lexus dealership and the amount of people who don't change out their air filters when recommended to do so is insanely high. But as soon as you send a photo with all the dust and dirt in there they decide to change them pretty darn quick!

How often should one change the cabin filter?

I can say with certainty 34,000 miles and 14 BOH trails as well as several trips to the Mojave, exceeds what I would say is the limit. Additionally, only 8000 miles and around 400 miles of dirt roads/trails is probably about where I'd change it.

I have 11000 miles and have changed mine 2X's first time was less than 5000 miles due to a Moab trip. just changed again and that included a lot of dirt trails in montana. In my Mazda cx5 which sees very little gravel roads about 1X a year or every 15000 miles or so

I solo, which one am I?
Leader in your own mind?

Yuks aside, I solo exclusively, and I didn't think it was necessary to change it until I noticed the A/C airflow start to diminish, which was at 4 years & 20K miles. And it wasn't nearly as bad as some pictured here..

The second guy in the pic should consider changing or blowing it off after every ride. Seriously.

Either way, as soon as you think the air flow is starting to diminish, change it. Reduced airflow over the evaporator coil is quite hard on the A/C, and can cause compressor failure.

And if your cabin filter is filthy, your engine air filter prolly is too...
