I had big problems with Uconnect and CarPlay on my recent long roadtrip.

I was running an iPhone and iPad (Gaia rocks!). About 25% of the time, CarPlay wouldn't recognize my phone at all. I had the iPad connected to bluetooth for these situations. But a few times, this wouldn't even work. So had to try and delete phone/ipad and start over. Sometimes that would work, if not, I'd have to reset the whole radio.

Another problem I ran into was that all the usb outlets would stop working. this made me super nervous, as I was really out in the middle of nowhere. I figured out the problem after a few times of this happening. Whenever I would plug my Garmin Inreach or Fenix into the usb to charge, it would stop all the usb from working. Luckily I had a wall plug in for three usbs on it, so I was able to keep those charged.

I've been so happy with the rest of the Jeep, but these issues lead to some massive frustration on the trip. When you're driving through the middle of the Canada and Alaska, you need some tunes! I decided to wait on taking the Jeep into the dealer until I get the new Uconnect software update. Want to see if this fixes the problems.

Oh, Waze and Google Maps are so awesome CarPlay.
I am very sorry to hear about this. I understand how this could be frustrating on a road trip. Send me a direct message once you decide to take it in to the dealer. I'd be glad to escalate your inquiry for further handling.

OK, so I did a few things today.. Something "MAY" have worked...

First I updated to iOS12. I also did a "reset all settings" on my iPhone 7+, which leave my apps and data in place. This had NO effect on the problem.

Today I updated my TazerJL which I haven't used for a couple of months. I unmarried it so I could take it in for a service and didn't reinstall it. I installed it and made my normal changes (tire size, disable ESS and AutoPark) and then I rebooted the system.

Problem is gone.. at least for the moment. I'm going to let it sit for a bit and go for a drive tonight to see if the problem comes back.

Oh, and I deleted that Apple Maps crap. Google Maps on CarPlay is not perfect but it is vastly better than Apple Maps. I have seen one little issue with GMaps in that it doesn't realize when I'm driving in the Express Lanes for I25 in Denver. Those lanes separate from the main road and totally throw off the navigation which starts repeating itself over and over again to go straight on I-25. Otherwise gMaps is great. I still can't wait to get Waze.

Hopefully the fix keeps working for you. Unfortunately, hard reboots (and soft reboots) haven’t not proven to be long term fixes for me :(

I'm going on a long drive today, I'll know for sure at that point.

How are you rebooting your system?

Carplay seems to connect sometimes and not connect other times. If I plug/unplug it like 3 times it usually ends up working. Quite annoying. iOS 12.

3 options:

1. Fast reboot on TazerJL
2. Full reboot on TazerJL
3. Battery disconnect

I’m generally good for multiple days at a time. Then, randomly it cuts in and out on a drive and then goes dark and will not work at all until the phone is disconnected for an hour or so and the vehicle is off.

I'm good for now. To get this resolved it might be good to have a ticket open with Chrysler for your local dealer to reference. At the end of my process I ended up on the phone with an actual human being who gave me his number to call back in case of further trouble.

Edit: Spoke too soon. CarPlay and backup camera failed this afternoon.

I did a full reboot with the Tazer. So far, so good. I programmed five different trips through gMaps and CarPlay and it worked flawlessly..

Well almost. The Tazer had one option set to where the backup cam comes on when I use the turn signals. I found that occasionally, when using the turn signal, my music stops playing and never resumes.

This isn’t an issue for me because I didn’t want the cam to come on with my turn signal. So I disabled that feature.

I’m pretty convinced it’s hardware. Bad hub connections, like others have reported (shorting of wires, and then the Jeep “kills” that connection for a bit for safety purposes.

I think a lot of these issues happen if the uconnect is not fully booted after start and you connect your phone via usb. unplugging and plugging the phone in sometimes helps. I try to wait a few dozen seconds before plugging in the phone.

I was having big problems on carplay previously and just stopped using it. It is a dumpster fire that has been a common annoyance with refusing to connect, drop outs, and poor performance in general on my current wrangler,, 16 honda civic, and 18 subaru outback. Manufacturers are slow to implement updates.

I quit using it and reverted to straight bluetooth with a good car mount system. I just use the phone to navigate etc.
Now after IOS 12, Pandora will not show stations, it just shows loading.

One thing everyone should check on the iPhone if you're having connection problems. Get a toothpick and make sure there is no lint in the lightning connector port. I did this and dug A LOT of lint out. My connection issues disappeared after that.

@Sgt Beavis

Yup .... good point!

Regardless of Android phone, iPhone, even USB ports in the JL itself, .... really is a positive thing to do, to routinely clean them out.

A can of compressed air is great to use for this and less apt to damage the port.

Also, if you ever get a moisture detected message on the phone, a few seconds of compressed air blowing on the port and then a phone restart will usually clear up the issue..clear up the moisture detected message.

Another issue is, cables do get iffy, go bad with use... over time. IF you have issues try a new (correct) cable.

Several times over the past month when I start my JL i'm not getting back up camera or maps. Then after a while when I restart the Jeep it's there. Any thoughts?

Not sure if it will help your issue any but .... I noticed early on after getting my JL, that if I did not wait say 20- 30 seconds or so after starting the JL, before I placed the tranny in forward or reverse, that the back-up camera would lets say hiccup occasionally.. not come on.. blue screen..

Are you allowing everything to lets call it fully boot up before you place demands on it?
