Cam Sensor Fault

My 23 Ecodiesel is intermittently throwing a check engine light. The error code resolves to a cam sensor fault.

The engine seems to idle rougher than usual for the check engine light is one, but then it seems to resolve itself.

the dealer Recommended keeping the Jeep for a full diagnostic. They kept it for 10 days (!) and couldn’t replicate the failure.

so what now? Has anyone heard anything about this? My Jeep has 16k miles.

It looks like that recall is for the 2nd gen EcoDiesel, the JLs have the 3rd Gen. Assuming the part number they have listed in the article is correct (68493358AA,), it appears that it's been superseded with 68582742AA on ours.

I started getting it on my 2023 Gladiator EcoDiesel Monday this week. So far it came on twice and it was gone by itself next morning. Got appointment to check it but it is few weeks out.

Any resolution here guys? My 2023 diesel with 8000 miles threw this code twice this week, and I leave for Colorado tomorrow morning (for a week long, 2500 mile trip that includes all of the trails around Telluride). It’s at the dealer right now for the second time this week. This code was thrown in the last few months and was stored, but resolved itself. I took it to the dealer 2 days ago and they reset it and it came back last night, which may be indicative of the sensor actually failing this time. Fu** my life. This vacation is needed and these trails are a 20 year bucket list item. Do I go and just pray? I’m thinking I probably have to. Dealer said sensor is on backorder until “at least 08/29”.

I’m taking the trip regardless. Service manager said it’s likely just intermittent anyway; I have not experienced ANY performance issues to date. “Sometimes Joel, you just have to say, ‘what the fu**’”. (Risky Business)

You guys ready for this? I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel I’ve owned since new. And the 9 year old cam sensor in that is the exact part number as in my 2023 JL. So yes, the dealer took a 9 year old part out of my GC and put it in my new JL today to make the light go off. Voila. I’m shaking my damn head. It pays to go to the same dealer for 11 years now!!

I just purchased a (new) 2023 Rubicon on Friday that already had the fuel pump recall completed. It threw the P0341 and suffered a leak in the fuel line the same day. Dealer reset the code and fixed the leak. I picked it up on Saturday and it's thrown the code again today (and stalled once). I am taking it in tomorrow for them to look at it again.

I really like the diesel, but I am supposed to have 3 days to change my mind on it. Has anyone had luck with resolving this, or should I look into what my other options are (I really don't want to).

My CEL for that code continues to go on every couple of weeks. My dealer doesn’t seem to know how to fix it. I’m considering trying another dealer. It’s frustrating. Otherwise I love my diesel.

I have owned a 2014 Grand Cherokee Eco since new; it’s 9 years old now and has 118,000 miles on it. It’s currently in the shop; there’s a recall on the inner part of the camshaft sensor for that engine (which is the Gen 2). I can say this, and I bought my 2023 Rubi Diesel and sent it to AEV to be upfit (I’ve got about $95k in this Wrangler now): I’m not sure I want to own a Jeep diesel that isn’t under warranty. My Grand Cherokee diesel has been in and out of the shop repeatedly over the years for engine stuff. The CEL goes on and off in that vehicle too. I LOVE the power and the gas mileage, but these ARE NOT the most reliable of vehicles. My friends thought I was crazy to buy another Jeep diesel. But I do love them that much. I also have already purchased the 8 year 125,000 mile warranty for my new wrangler. That my two cents. My best advice to to buy the warranty!

I had a 2012 Wrangler with the Pentastar, for 10 years. It wasn’t the most reliable Jeep either. My GC is going to my son next week for his 16th bday; I’ve never just owned a single Jeep as my daily driver (I always had the other one as a backup vehicle). Anyway, time will tell if my Wrangler is reliable enough as a daily driver. I’m waiting on the fuel pump recall on both of these Jeeps; the Grand had an ETC (elec throttle control) light come on three times a few weeks ago, putting me into limp mode. The dealer has had that car 26 days with an exhaust leak and the ETC and it fell through the cracks (dealing with the general manager this morning on that). I’ve been an exclusive Jeep customer since 1998; but with my current batch of diesel issues happening on both my Jeeps, I’m slowly losing faith in the brand. My dealer has been great in the past; but this 26 day stretch this time is unacceptable and this morning I’m shaking the trees to get this car back to give to my son. They said they can’t find any stored codes on the ETC because the battery went dead. It’s one thing after another. All in all, I still love these vehicles, but it takes a lot of patience.

If this is the dealership that did the fuel pump recall service I would definitely use your option give it back and go elsewhere. If it was me I'd find one that doesn't have issues. It may not be easy but they're out there. Then I would start shopping for a future service dept. A very competent service dept. One that has at least two certified diesel mechanics. They've already demonstrated their incompetence. They obviously did something wrong. I would venture to say there was no problems with the fuel system beforehand. I'm standing with the few that have said I will seek the recall when the time comes for it. Mine for the moment is running flawlessly last thing I want to do is drop it into an incompetent service shop. Nowadays seems to be the norm. It's the fallout that started in 2020
