Bump Stops

Howdy. Swapped my wheels this weekend and noticed how little travel I have with these bump stops. Is that less than ideal? Running a 3” lift and Ranchos. Only complaint I’ve ever had since the lift was how harsh the ride is on poor roads. Assuming this is a major reason? Looks like they connect often and we have yet to off-road more than in a flat field.

Not familiar with Rancho's stuff but something doesn't look right there, Bud. My front bump stops on a 2 1/2" lift look like miniature hockey pucks. Those look like beer cans. Looks like you only have about two inches of travel, although that could be the photo angle I guess?

Front looks like you could dump an inch of bumpstop. You can buy the 1inch hockey pucks that metalcloak sells. You can stack them together and have as much bumpstop as you'd like.

You might also need to trash your sport fenders and get some rubicon fenders so you dont rub when flexing. if you offroad at all.

You also mentioned you swapped wheels. I don't know what wheels you got, but if they are larger than the 17inch wheels, they will give you a harsher ride.

Is the lift rancho or just the shocks? Which shocks (model and length)?
How much clearance do you have at full stuff?

It looks like you are bumped at around 3" F&R. What tire size?

Bumps provide tire clearance and protect your shocks.

I am running these with a 2.5" lift and rubicon fenders. I have 2 on each front wheel and each rear wheel. You can fit these in between the springs if you take the tire off and let whatever side you are working on flex.

If you’re going to go to the hockey, puck style, rather than spin, the money for the metal cloak branded ones, simply purchase a couple official hockey pucks from Lee Valley tools at a buck and a half apiece couple bolts couple washers and you’re good to go I did too to inch bump stops for my daughter’s jeep, and with the cost of the pucks and the hardware it was about.

True. Metalcloak does claim their bumpstops are not hockey pucks, they are made of a more durable material and have more consistent thickness, better QA which makes them more expensive. However, people have been using actual hockey pucks without issues. So there's that.

the lift is Zone Offroad ZONJ33 and its a very basic minimal kit. I swapped the shocks after a couple months as I thought they were the issue, but still not riding like I'd like. Installed a Rancho adjustable track bar up front as well. oh the Rancho shocks are RS999065 and RS999066

If you are by your Jeep, can you put a tape measure on the shock lengths front and rear at ride height? Measure center of bolt/eye end to end.

I think the installed bump stops you have are too tall. They should probably be 2” or so, those look like 3” at least. On my JLR with 35” tires and a 2.5” TeraFlex lift, bump stops are 2”. If I kept the stock 33” tires I wouldn’t need to add any.

Assume he's got the lower sport fenders, at least something to consider.

I always over-share non pertinent information without enough detail... Swapped wheels as i didn't love the ones i had but both are 17s with the same BFG 35s. would LOVE some rubi fenders but haven't had any luck finding some.

stock S shocks 15.6" and 16.88" minimum length. So if you're not changing anything else that could limit travel, like a steering stabilizer relocation, then shock compression or tire/fender will be what limits your uptravel and bumpstops.
So nothing replaces real world testing, but you might be close to minimum because your shocks are a few inches longer than stock.
Those Ranchos have short travel, which is fine, but comparatively you could ride some other shocks which are about as long extended, but compress to a shorter length and you could reduce your bumpstop.

1in bumpstop extension would be ok with those shocks if not doing any fast speed stuff that could compress the rubber bumpstop all the way. 2in bumpstop to be safe. Very little travel on those shocks I agree.
