It’s been a 30 year journey for me with Jeeps. My first car I ever bought was a ‘92 red YJ 4 banger with stick for $12,700 out the door. There was a TJ lifted on 15” steelies and 33’s, 2 JKs, and a 20 JLURD that crapped the bed and was bought back. After 6 months of waiting and a great experience with Chapman Horsham, I got my last and best Jeep, the 392XR in red just like my first one. Adjusting for inflation, it was only slightly more expensive than my first? (That’s what I told my wife!)
With under 150 miles, my youngest and I broke it in on Broken Arrow in Sedona. Here’s some of my observations.
Good
Jeeps always make me smile when I drive them, this one makes me giggle.
Power and torque for days
Most comfortable Jeep I’ve ever owned
Tons of tech that almost takes the skill out of it
The sound, oh the sound
Bad
While I knew gas mileage wouldn’t be great, I’ve never worried about fuel while I’m off road. When we do our Moab trip, I will be bringing Gerry cans with at least 10 gal of gas.
Power. My son goosed it a couple of times in his youthful exuberance and I could see how that could get you in trouble pretty quickly (I now understand fully what happened to alksion)
It makes a lot of heat. We got the steering motor overheat warning. Just shut it down for a minute and it cleared. Probably because my son was turning the wheel while stationary.
Wanders a bit on the highway. My diesel did that until they changed out the steering box and I changed out the front LCA’s. The 50 psi probably didn’t help either!
All in all, a fun first off road trip. We got a little Arizona pinstriping to get it over with and we’re ready to have a long, fun relationship with this one.
