I normally do a break-in oil change on new cars just to make sure any manufacturing debris is cleared out. What are you guys doing on your 392s?

Thanks

Yep, any new engine unless the manufacturer or builder explicitly states a break-in oil needs to be run for a specified interval (even if it's not a 392). To my knowledge all Wranglers, all engines, use regular service oil from the factory and can be changed out at any time. I've got my first oil change lined up when it hits 500 miles.

I did 1000 miles, seemed a little darker than expected. Will do one at 3000, then 5000, then haven't decided really.. somewhere between 3-4. Mostly bc I intend to keep it for a while and hopefully make the engine last longer.

I was reading on another forum just now that a tech that works for Jeep said not to do a change until the break-in period ends (1,500 miles) so everything gets seated properly and the break-in oil they use from the factory has added properties to ensure that.

I changed mine at 1500. So far no difference and no issues.

You have to change the oil so often, it didn’t matter break in or not. I couldn’t get to what I thought was enough miles before I had to change the oil.

Oil changes, the Myth lives on.

My BiL was a scientist for Mobil Oil and he told one time that if what people believe about how often to change oil (3000 mi) and how fast to change break in oil (500 mi). Mobil believes it would impact oil sales almost as much as 10% in losses.

FEW engines require a break in, those that do, you prob don't want to buy anyhow.

When to change oil. Every 3000 mi WHY? Because that average engine burns a quart of oil every 1000 mi and you should check you oil every 1000 mi and add a quart at that time and then change oil and oil filter at 3000 mi. Is this TRUE? YES!!!! it WAS back before the 1960s.

Then everything changed on a drag strip and it was called "Blueprinting" your engine, which turned into what was known as "Invisible horsepower".

The problem pre 1960 was "blow-by" and that took place inside the combustion chamber and was the result of out of round or improper diameter of the cylinder and it resulted in oil and combustion gases getting past the piston rings and a loss of oil and horsepower.

Back then tolerances were measured in: .0 - .00. Today engine are built with tolerances: .000 - .0000

Today a high performance engine like in my Z06, will not burn a quart oil in 10,000 mi

Today few engines are built from Sand castings like were. Back in the day you broke and changed first oil at 500 mi and in many cases that was not soon enough. At 300 mi I saw spoon full of sand come out of a filter.

Here is my advice, do as the guidance in the owners book says, follow that and you won't go wrong.

My F 450, 475 HP, 1050 TORQUE has an oil monitor, I changed my oil first time at 8000 mi, when it told me to. Now it tells me somewhere between7-10k miles depending upon how much I travel with how big of a load, I am running at around 25XXX lbs Gross when I roll. My engine in my truck is rated as a 1 Million mile engine on the engine itself. I use Shell T6, best oil for HD use!

That is all good, but keeping your warranty means every 6 months. Doesn’t matter miles for most since most are Not getting 5k miles on 392s in 6 months. My 21 has 5k miles total and the oil has been changed 5 times…

Everyone has an opinion, but I think changing oil more often is better than less often. Even if you go by manufacturer's guidelines, their engineers may have calculated the life span of the engine is (making this up) 150,000 miles. If you do your own maintenance, make sure its done right and on time, you'll probably get a lot more. After all, if I was making cars, I would tell a consumer do this (thinking it will get them at least past warranty) and then let them come back and buy a new car. I want mine to last much longer than the 10yr extended I got.

Here's a prime example of wear on oil in turbos. Granted its Ford, but hey, I'm sure there are some similarities. The whole video is worth watching, but the prime message I get is, recommended oil change intervals get you past the warranty and are not good enough if you plan to hold them long term.

4:02 mark if you just want to see something quick

Changing the oil every 6 months is a waste of money, no opinion about it. The oil I drain looks the same as the oil I put in. So as soon as my warranty is up it will be every 5k…. But until then I will do what is required.

EXACTLY what I said: "Here is my advice, do as the guidance in the owners book says, follow that and you won't go wrong."

Albeit, I would like to see the page and para that says change engine oil every 6 mo, never heard anything like that.

Here is a FACT: OIL DOES NOT WEAR OUT...unless subjected to extreme heat as over 250 degrees, at 275 it begins to break down.

What does wear out is the additives there are in the oil and its that which determines how long before you change oil.

Since you asked. ;) From the 392 owners manual page 18…

 Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 6,000 miles (10,000 km) or 6 months, whichever comes first.

THANK YOU!

6000 mi or 6 moi which ever comes first, I buy into the 6000 mi, but I can see no justification for every 6 mo.

As I stated, Oil does not break down, in fact it will last forever as long at its not exposed to temp beyond 250 F for a long period of time and it only the additives that get consumed.

Our ranch trucks, NEVER changed oil because it was changed as we drove it. We added a quart about once a month more or less more in the summer and less in the winter. Put over 200k miles on that old '54 Chevy and sold it for more than we paid for it in '75 when we sold the ranch. We paid $600 for in 54. The other truck a 59 Chevy, never changed oil in it either. It too was an oil burner, why change.

Wonder how much Jeep Dealer gets for an oil change? x 2 per year my bet is Jeep Dealer makes some money on this.
