My Wife and I have an impromptu trip to Bardstown over the weekend. Stopped at Heaven Hil and Willett. Toured Lux Row and Maker's Mark. Lux Row was cool to see a modern distillery vs a historic distillery. Their tour samples were top notch. Davies County Tasted Barrel, Rebel Cask Strength, Ezra Brooks Cask Strength and Old Ezra 7. We added on a mini Glencairn and premium pour which turned out to be Single Double Barrel. I also had a pour of 12yr Double Barrel and got to keep the rock glass for $15. I was at Maker's 17 years ago and the place is almost unrecognizable. the gif shop used to be the restaurant and you couldn't drink there, so no samples. Bottles were dipped in a crock pot!. Maker's samples were regular Makers, Maker's Cask Strength, Makers 46 and a Private Selection. I had an Apple Butter OF before the tour. I got yelled at by the lady that helps you dip your own bottles at Maker's when I tried to get a deep dip on one of our bottles!! She sorta snatched it from me and it ended up with a funky splatter wax job! :)

Maker's is one of my favorites due to the homey feel. Woodford kind of has that feel too. Lux is pretty good, Rabbit Hole has that modern vibe too.

Bardstown Bourbon has a good tour too, they have an interesting story doing contract recipes, distillation, and maturation.

I’ve never been much of a Makers Mark guy traditionally. I hadn’t had it in years. I hadn’t been drinking anything for the last several months. I reunited with a good friend I hadn’t seen in a year or more and he picked the place. He chose a neighborhood bar a block from his house that didn’t have a huge bourbon selection. Maker’s 46 was on the top shelf. I tried it and I like it quite a bit. Makers is unveiling a 12 year bourbon soon that I’d like to try but it’ll likely not be widely available.

Russel’s Reserve 10 year is another good whiskey that I recently discovered that I like. The price is nice for a 10 year.

That Maker's 12yr is already averaging $400 on the secondary ?. We'll likely never see it in my state...

A very small local distillery…. Elk Heights in Eastern Wa. For those RV Harvest Host members definitely put that on your overnight stay. Great host and excellent whiskey and other liquors. Best part of our stay is he made awesome cocktails since he knew we just had to stumble across the parking lot to our nest for the night.

I ate dinner last night at a restaurant and noticed that they had Weller Full Proof. I’d never tried it before so I ordered it neat.

First observation is that I should have asked the cost before ordering. I found out when I got the check that it was $24. Ouch. Steep but not a deal breaker. I’d guessed maybe $15-18. Second, it smells great. Lastly, I found out I don’t like it, even if it were suggested retail. It’s just too much. It’s both sweet and very peppery. Quite hot and not mellow at all. Primitive. Strong. A kick in the nuts.

Pass.

For me, the best Weller is 12 year. All the goodness without the after-burn.

I like that one too. Much smoother than the full proof. And easier to find around here. I got a bottle for $50 once and $60 at another store.

That is a bummer. Living here in bourbon country it took a relationship and 4 yrs to finally get a bottle of 12yr. I got it, tried it and the top is back on. Honestly glad I only paid MSRP. I would have been very sad if paid anything more. It will sit on the bar and I will let friends that visit give it a go. Not worth the hype for me. I will take my Blantons all day long over that.

anyone have suggestions for the new year? gave the Kirkland Canadian whiskey a taste. It isn't my favorite but for the price it does make a decent old fashion. Ill be headed out to find something new to try for super bowl. Hoping to find a good Rye.

Elijah Craig, is my utility all around bourbon. I recently had Jefferson's Ocean Rye and it was really nice. No others come to mind that I have had.

I'm not much for drinking rye neat, but do prefer it in an OF over bourbon. After testing 7 or 8 "budget" ryes, I've settled on Old Forester 100 Rye.

My latest bottle that I've picked up was Larceny Barrel Proof A124, but after blinding it against C923, I prefer C923. I'm more of a Wheater guy, and the next I think I'm going to pick up is a Southern Star Paragon wheated bourbon out of North Carolina or Bernhiem Barrel Proof A224 Wheat Whiskey if I run across one.
you cant go wrong with the old forester 100 rye. That has a great flavor. Ive enjoyed a few glasses over a camp fire of bullets rye that wasnt to bad on a cold winters night but it does have a nice warmth to it
