I am seeing some rust spots on my sides steps/rock rails. I don't think the salt they put on the roads in Chicago is helping.

The plan is to clean the rust up and repaint the steps (black). Need some help figuring out the best paint. I don't want to remove the steps and spray so my target is something that I can brush on. Was thinking either Rust-oleum or a bed liner type paint. Anyone have experience painting side steps. Would using a bed liner type paint be better or not a good idea?

If you have rust on them put Ospho on before painting. It turns the rust black and helps the paint stick. It also prevents the rust from coming back.

As @tk1700 said, put ospho on them before hand. Scuff the surfaces you are painting first as well to promote adhesion. I would suggest using raptor liner. great product, very durable and nice even texture.

If I was doing it and wasn't removing them, I would mask off and spray it for a better finish.

I do this every year or so; remove rock rails, grind down any rust, make sure they're clean, and I use a rust converter on the bare metal then black Plasti-Dip.

Used this in my Ace Engineering rock rails (had rust in several weld areas).. went through this winter ... still look great. Gives a slight texture for better grip with shoes etc... happy with results so far

I thought about rolling it on instead of the spray can. Over spray could be an issue if touching them up while still mounted on the Jeep.
