I know this is covered elsewhere, but I still find it wild that the actuator isn't available as a separate part. "Replace the axle". Seems like a sign of the times, I had a bearing go out on my Tundra and nobody wanted locally wanted to press a new bearing in. Everyone wanted to replace the whole assembly from the spline out to the wheel hub. I couldn't find a machine shop to do the press work for me locally, so I found a transmission shop who hopefully will get it back to me today.

No mechanic wanted to do anything short of $1800. I guess I'd better start getting handy with a hydraulic press.
Toyota axle shafts are the meanest MF’rs around. We charge 500 a side for the work. Had To fabricate a special tool for the job.

In the case of OP’s Jeep, they will want to use a salvage yard part. Salvaged or remanufactured parts are nearly mandatory by insurance companies.

Agreed, they'll find a salvage axle with less miles on it than the OPs axle. In their minds that makes the OP "whole" under the eyes of the law. If you don't like it, pay the difference yourself. The days of insurance companies "doing the right thing" are long gone in the era of all these phony personal injury lawyers.

I wouldn’t say it’s the wrong thing to do at all. Much better than waiting months for a back ordered part.

of course, you could always use this opportunity to upgrade axles.

So….. your jeep went out and hit a large rock? If you were not in it at the time how do you know it wasn’t off road?
I had to laugh at this, but did want to share a story from 6 years ago where I was driving down the interstate at 70mph and all of a sudden cars where going all over the damn place and I ended up hitting.....

Wait for it.....

A portion of an effing La-Z-Boy recliner that went under my car (did $1k+ worth of damage) and then I dodged some sort of personal safe which went under an Explorer behind me and destroyed the axle and most of the underside of the vehicle. I remember looking in my rear view mirror and seeing the Explore "jump" in the air. Luckily nobody was hurt, but I was thinking that the guy in the Explorer was going to have a heck of a time explaining what happened. I wish I had kept the police report, as it was comical.

I'm still curious how this person missed seeing the GIANT boulder in the middle of the lane.
Was the hooker in their lap at the time? Or maybe...

You might be able to squeeze out an upgrade. A friend of mine hit a concrete pole in a parking garage, and bent his front axle/suspension. The insurance company allowed him to have it repaired at a local 4x4 shop rather than the dealer. He wound up with a ProRock 44 and upgraded control arms in the front for the same cost to the insurance company as what the dealer would have charged for the stock repair.

Not unusual to encounter large rocks in the road where I live.

I have no doubt he hit a rock. Just the way he originally wrote it made it sound like the jeep went out and hit a rock without him.

This thread is getting ridiculous. I'm kind of curious what the conspiracy folks think The Real Story is.
I intentionally didn't get into the details of the accident because my post wasn't about that. It was more of "This is my issue what can I realistically expect".

In absence of information, people fill in the gaps with mostly incorrect assumptions. Like a huge rock was in the middle of the street. Or that the Jeep (with me driving) hit said rock perpendicular square on. FYI the other area with major damage aside from the rear axle is the front passenger wheel/tire.

Did this rock jump out on the road? Or were you texting and driving? We gotta know the whole story

Joking aside for a min. If you haven't already, I would have someone who knows what they are doing examine that front end. That's a pretty good hit.
