Gotcha. That's why I'm mechanical. I only know enough electrical to get very specific things done.
No prob. The important point to take from this is that the winch itself will die before that solenoid does. One of the many observations i've noticed about the Jeep forums - every single member is the most hardcore rock crawling SOB the world has ever seen if you ask them - winching 747's down Hell's Revenge multiple times a day. Thus they need only the absolute best, which is all the stuff they have, of course.

If you need a bigger disconnect to be able to sleep at night, then by all means, get one. I understand. But that solenoid is more than enough for any of the popular 12k winches out there, even if you use it more heavily than anyone here actually does.

I have mine wired through the included switch that came with my Badland APEX 12k winch. However, that high capacity relay idea on page 1 is fantastic and I may upgrade to that this summer.

Jeep Wrangler JL Battery kill switches for winch ? {filename}

You can be passive aggressive and throw shade from behind your spec sheets.

I'm going to go out and Jeep in the real world.

Uhh, "bless your heart" still commonly used by folks under 30 in these parts

I guess that's one of the problems with regional diction. Up here, only your grandma would use such a phrase. Might be followed by "whipper snapper" or "kids these days"...something like that.

Nah out here is actually mostly young people. It's like they discovered sassy southern shit on TikTok and claimed it as their own. Nevermind that it's been a thing forever.

Nobody out here uses it at all. Except maybe a few transplants. Or people who are using it as intended intentionally in a minor dustup. ;)

My Smittybilt winch instructions says wire direct to battery. I'd feel better if I had a disconnect switch on the positive terminal near the battery just in case of front end crash, possible drain, etc. My intent is to have the switch 'off' all the time and open the hood and turn switch 'on' when I use the winch (or maybe should use Aux 1 + relay?).

The Badland 12K winch even includes such a switch, and there are lots of clean out-of-the-box options (switch + mount) for 4Runner, but not so much for Wrangler.

Can you guys show your clean solutions? Thanks!
I have a Smitty H2O and I wired it with a 250 or 300A marine fuse. Used it for 5+ years without a problem, moved the fuse over to my 2026 and used winch for recovery already a few times. So the Smitty won't draw more than 300A, I can tell you that.
