Usually you can see a steady amount of diesel trucks going through a station, that usually makes sure there's not fuel just sitting in tanks too long.
Ya here in San Diego it’s not always obvious and there arnt big rig stations that are for sure seeing turnover ;) not many stations offer diesel though so I’ve been assuming the ones that do must be used regularly? ?‍♂

I fill up at a Costco right near a major highway (I17) after getting bad diesel at a low-volume "supermarket" fuel station. At Costco, there are always at least five diesel-powered vehicles in line waiting to fill up - busy place.

And make sure you change the fuel filter regularly.
Yes sir. My brother has a 21 Cummins diesel and he advised me instead of 10k miles. Replace the fuel filter at around 6-7k …

I guess I'm more talking to those who live in America actual. I have lived there and in the north eastern wasteland area, also known as NY, best of luck to y'all on determining the good diesel stops!

I agree about the fuel. I find it interesting that the Ram manual recommends fuel filter changes every 10k while our manual says 20k. All my techs here at the dealership say that 10k is the number.

My personal preference is once I have determined the best fuel stations in my local area I try and be consistent and fill up each and every time then around 15K replace and inspect old filter. So far I have not yet found anything of concern or to warrant an earlier fuel filter change but I'm completely on board with the added security of doing it sooner to eliminate future problems or costly repairs. I might just do it every 10. My bonus here is i run " Hot Shot diesel treatment through my tank on a regular basis. Both the " Diesel Extreme" and the "Every Day Treatment" approximately every 3 tanks. In doing so I have noticed a decrease in my DEF consumption

I use Hot Shot as well.

Do you:
  • Bring it to the station and pour it in before refueling
  • Pour it into a newly full tank at home after
  • Put it into your near-empty tank before going to the station?

Option #1 would seem to get the best mixing, but the stuff is nasty to mess with while people are waiting behind you (like at my busy Costco).

Pour it in your tank right before you leave the house to fill up, or take all the time you need at the pump like those other miscreants who sat in their car for 10 minutes before deciding to get their rotund selves and minions out of the car. :swear:

and my CP4 poofed with just 4100 miles on it.

no indications of bad fuel; this is not my first diesel.
especially stupid is that the CP4 design is such that a failure catastrophically contaminates the fuel, necessitating a replacement of the entire fueling system.

some people get lucky with the CP4, while some of them just suck.

5th diesel I've owned with the CP4 and no issues yet, but they can be a problem with poor fuel. I'm not that concerned with it, obviously, since I keep buying them. :)

#1.
i want it mixed in well.

i try not to waste my time or anyone else's when i get my chance at the pump, but nobody goes to Costco because they're in a hurry.
you had to wait your turn in line; now do what you gotta'.

I am using hot shots and carry the bottle with me and I add some before every fill up. I figure if the gas pumpers can loiter at the diesel pump I can take my sweet time once I get there.

The diesel pump is combined with the gas pump and three times out of four I am waiting for someone to finish pumping gas and there is at lease two gas only pumps available.....

In a perfect world I would do things in this order "A" or "C" but in my non perfect world it's always "B" poured in when I get home. If I made a conscience effort and just stick it in the cab knowing I would be fueling just after leaving my home. But my habit is always top off fuel before coming home. Living in extreme heat like yourself I try and run my def fluid near almost empty ( 130° + temps in the garage) unless heading out a along run or trip before adding new def which is stored at room temperature inside the home. A little extreme I know, but so is the ridiculous whole "def thing".

Okay, I just got back from Costco. I did #1, but I did it off to the side before getting in line. I don't like it when people dawdle in line so I try to set a good example. Or...it was my Catholic guilt rearing its head. Those nuns really made a strong impression.
