Backup Camera issue

We've had our JL for about 2 weeks now and have the same rear camera blue screen issue that many of you have. When the camera works, it works 100%. Our salesman said he can arrange for a new camera to be installed (which is great if it fixes the problem). Software is all up to date. Thanks to comments in this post, we have found that the camera works if we wait about 15 seconds before shifting into drive or reverse (3-5 seconds wasn't enough). When it doesn't work right away, it won't work at all until we stop the vehicle and start it up again and wait about 15 seconds. My question is... is the camera *supposed to* work immediately when you start up the vehicle and go into reverse? If so, we will try replacing the camera. It's a pain in the butt to wait before reversing, but not the end of the world. If the camera should work immediately, then I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem now, before whatever is causing it results in more issues. Thanks!

Thanks Larry! I should also ask, does it work if you start up the car and go into reverse immediately? When we do that, it won't work at all, even if we drive for hours and try to activate it with the app. We have to stop the car and start the car again - wait 15 seconds - then reverse or drive.

That camera needs to boot up properly before you place the JL in forward or reverse!
I wait the few seconds, until I see the accept message on the radio and then shift to forward or reverse.

You can have the camera replaced but you will still see the same scenario if you do not let that camera boot up properly.

@FWB FL

IF you are shifting into forward or reverse very quickly it will be on the horizon so to speak in regard to your getting the camera hiccup.

Dropping back in to give an update on the "Black Screen, fully updated issue". I had it checked out by the dealership and they diagnosed it as a bad back up camera so it is currently being replaced. Kind of a pain but they gave me a loaner vehicle so its not a terrible inconvenience. I do appreciate the customer service so good on them.

at dealership today for camera check ... camera failed miserably ... verified dash display shows the 't-shirt' and radio and reverse gear activate the camera - but screen is black with X in top right corner ... personally am thinking some sort of photo-sensor in camera is not working because system sees the camera but video signal is black except for in bright daylight when it works normally - but am not knowledgeable with cameras ... am going back after vacation Oct.23 for servicing it :)

Happened to me today for the first time. I've had my JLU Rubicon with the 8.4" screen for about a month now and suddenly, no guides on the backup camera. I checked the uconnect update site and it says I'm current.

Many that experience this issue find the next day the issue has remedied itself.

You can more often then not, resolve the issue right away, by disconnecting all 12v power to the JL which causes the radio to reboot and this remedies the issue. You can do a fuse pull to reboot things also. Of course, the issue may return.

Some see the issue once and never have it occur again. Other's have the issue and it turns out the b/u camera is bad, etc.

Also, since you had a 7 radio and had it changed to an 8.4, then maybe it is a connection that is a muck, etc..

Thanks! We tried the reboot and double checked all of the connections. It’s working perfectly except for the green screen. I’m hoping maybe it just resolves itself? Do dealers give you a hard time if you bring it in for warranty work on a factory unit that didn’t come with the Jeep itself?

Did you alter, change , move the spare tire carrier. If so, look for a pinched camera wiring harness in that area. This could cause an issue.

Are you sure you rebooted the radio. Tell me how you did this.. You may think you rebooted it.

Are you sure you rebooted the radio. Tell me how you did this.. You may think you rebooted it.
I’ll check with my bf. He’s the in-house mechanic and wrenches on all of our cars. He got the reboot instructions from these forums and knows his stuff pretty well. I didn’t think of the camera itself in the spare tire but it worked perfectly on the 7” and nothing was adjusted on the tire or camera at all during swap.

There’s been a select few that have connector issues where they weren’t fully connected or the lock isn’t seated properly. But there is also numerous software updates suppose to be coming out.

Moving on up .....
I have had green screen issue once and loss of the guide lines on 2 occasions. In all three scenarios, it just started working again on its own. So much for having confidence in your vehicle.

I get a black screen occasionally on my JLUR and have been getting that for the last 5 months. The camera seems to work better when I wait about 20 seconds after starting up and before going into reverse. It also works better when it's raining for some reason. Basically, it works just enough for me to be lazy and not go to the dealership.
