Back-up Camera Price

Hi everyone!

I'm new here. Reserved my JL last month and will finally be able to pick it up soon!

Unfortunately, the dealership in my country is absolutely horrible. They've removed the backup cameras from the Sport, and I have to buy it separately for about $1000. Is this a reasonable price? I feel like it's way too high, but I don't have any other option, as I don't want my warranty to be void.

I know I have the option of just not buying the camera, but I feel like a new car should at least have a reverse camera, and I want to pick the car up with everything ready, rather than add it in the future.

Your options are to order it configured with the camera and pay the $1000 and have it covered by manufacturer warranty, buy the part separately for less and have it installed (may not be covered by warranty), but an aftermarket rear camera solution for far less money and not have any factory warranty.

They’re not standard equipment in every international market outside of North America so it’s not necessary to remove them.

I know you guys want to bash EPA, NHTSA, or any governmental agencies whenever possible. However, it is only in the US that government mandates backup camera on every new car, not even in the socialism Europe (although 99% of cars do have them over there).

Some studies indicate a reduction in accidents among drivers older than 70 years having backup cameras. The reduction in accidents for drivers 70 years and younger was minimal if at all. Without intending to offend older drivers, perhaps some of them are less mobile or able to look backward, have poorer eyesight, or have lost some driving skills. I mean age is what it is.

So to the OP, maybe look at your circumstances and consider if you really need a backup camera, and if it will be much of a benefit compared to the cost.

Yes to both these things. I have an acquaintance where a grandparent ran over their grandchild and killed them. Just horrific. But I wouldn't pay $1,000 to have one.

It would be nice to have, but the benefits are not really there for me. I'd forgo the camera completely and save the money and warranty. But if you really want the camera, I would get it from the factory to save the warranty.
