1495 includes everything, 8.4 and alpine. Pretty good deal when you start adding nav to other cars alone
I went with the infotainment system as well but it is my understanding you have to pay a one time fee of $595 to activate the vavigation system. After that it is good for the life of the vehicle.

yes but the gps on you phone doesn't work without a cell signal I think. at least on my apple iphone last year camping it didn't. so for me the dedicated gps is the ticket. I'll the alpine as a bonus.
You get a lot more with the infotainment system than the nav and the 8.4 screen will be nice!

Absolutely getting the infotainment package for the speaker upgrade, well worth it, and the Sirius XM Gaurdian. I want to remote start my Jeep from anywhere when it's hot enough for Air to be cranked or cold enough to get it warmed up before I get in.
XM Guardian exists in Canada, but the info coming out of CES seems to suggest that the features on the JL only work in the US. Do you know whether that's the case?

Any ideas on how the base radio on the Sport sounds? We arent that big into music listening but do so from time-to-time.

I keep hearing that at volume there is distortion. Could that be a result of poor factory speakers? Decently good aftermarket speakers are fairly cheap as an DIY upgrade. Is the standard head unit woefully under-powered?

The only comparison I know is in my 2015 Dodge Caravan which has the radio that appears identical to the 430 radio in the JKs. It sounds plenty good too me. If stock JL radio is as good then I'm good.

My wife only cares about back-up camera and the base radio has it. I guess i can't see myself financing another $1000 for the 7" upgrade and we use GPS on our phones too with a simple dash-mount.
This is kind of what I wanted to know but probably impossible to tell until we hear it for ourselves....just from research on the JK it was awful.

So the JK and the Caravan have very different audio systems? My Caravan sounds pretty darn good.

The stock 430 in the JK sounds horrible, like really bad, I have it... i doubt the stock system in the JL will be as bad as the stock jk system, they almost have to try to make it that sh$@@y, with that said I made sure I have the premium system this time around.

You have no activation fee. It is activated when it arrives.

The 430 radio seems to be shared between various Chrysler models included my 2015 Caravan. Now the sound quality in my Caravan is pretty dang good. That would make the difference between the Wrangler and Caravan the speakers and/or placement rather than the shared 430 head-unit. If that's the case then a speaker upgrade could make a considerable difference. If volume still becomes an issue with wind noise while top down then amplification might need to be considered.

I'd bet the JK Wranglers had bottom-shelf speakers for the base audio system.

I will be getting the Infotainment system. In Colorado, most of the good trails in the mountains are outside cell phone range. It's easy to say to download them ahead of time, but I have frequently been snowed out of a given trial, so ended up getting to another. Nav won't be used much, but I will use it!

Or god forbid use a map. lol
I have been in a situation where having my phone map go out and having only a paper map available was equivalent to needing to know how to spell a word and having a dictionary in your lap. You need to know where you are to find yourself on the map.

I'm great with maps. Long before GPS I used to navigate through the coastal waters (boat) during moonless nights with nothing but a chart, compass and spot-light. Pretty tough but exciting.

The point is convenience and quality of life. I've done enough map and compass bullshit in my time, no thanks.

Fake news. The system is activated when you purchase it. Periodically, typically on an annual basis, you can choose to purchase an updated map database - it's not mandatory and won't affect the continued operation of your system.
