I've been thinking of getting one of those apple tags and stashing it in the Jeep just in case it gets stolen. Would they work for that? As I understand them, they piggy back off any apple devise blue tooth to let me know where they are. Is this correct? Could they be easily located by another apple devise and removed? How long do batteries last? Hope one of you techies can give some advise.

If the thief has an Apple phone they will be alerted to the device following along with them. They'll either ditch the vehicle or have it chopped up for parts before you get to it. My advice would be to make sure to disable to speaker and hide it really well if you try it.

If you hide the device so the thief doesn't know the vehicle is equipped how does it become an anti-theft or deterrent device? The whole idea of car alarms, kill switches, steering wheel clubs/locks, etc.... is to prevent somebody from breaking in and stealing it in the first place. At 3 a.m. are you going to track down the vehicle and approach some backroad barn with a car theft gang hanging out in it? Most damage is caused by the act of stealing it to begin with, and if they steal the vehicle and later find out it has a tracker I would be concerned they would just ditch the car and probably trash it.

I just use the Uconnect phone app to locate my vehicle. I have not need to (yet) since it is always parked in the garage.

If is difficult to prevent a skilled thief from stealing a vehicle. If you have the option to find it after it has been stolen, go for it.

Years ago, someone stole a family member's car. A few weeks later the police found it in another part of the city. No damage was done to the vehicle, nothing was taken from the vehicle.

Nope. Done with that bullshit.
Air Tags are not anti-theft, but possibly tracking/recovery.
I just posted this today in another thread.

"I use the Apple Air Tags.
It doesn't require any app to be installed like Tile does, but only works with Apple devices.
If someone walks by my car with an iPhone that has Bluetooth on, my Air Tag can report where it was when the person walked by.

To prevent stalking, Apple will alert a person with an iPhone if an Air Tag appears to be travelling with them that is not theirs.
They can then make it beep so they can locate it and get rid of it.

I took the speakers out of mine.

I have 2 in each car hidden very deep. Had to take a lot apart to hide them.

Cost ~$25 each.
Battery lasts ~1 year. "

a really easy way to disable your jeep is to put in a manual switch, nothing fancy, to power a 200amp relay from from the aux battery - terminal to the ground wire. put the switch in a inconspicuous place thats ez to use but difficult to look. Mount the relay as close to the aux battery as possible. Make it a pain in the but. Attempting to bypass this will at best allow the jeep to come on, but it will not start. The starter will never kick on.

relay could be pretty cheap, for example this will work just fine.

https://www.amazon.com/irhapsody-Continuous-Starter-Current-Control/dp/B07T48QKQB/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=MKXY2Q2L4JKL&keywords=12+volt+200+amp+relay&qid=1693684252&sprefix=12+volt+200+amp+relay,aps,106&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

Then you'll need a cable to go from the ground lug on the battery to one side of the relay. The control would be just 12 volts you provide from a tap somewhere. switch on, 12 volts to the relay coil and it energizes, closing the circuit. cheap effective theft deterance.

You know I've been thinking for a while a way to disable the vehicle from going anywhere manually.

Ideally it would be in a way that would be easy to disconnect and reconnect. However I haven't really thought of anything that won't ruin the vehicle if you end up taking off in it. Or for that matter I haven't thought of anything that isn't very big deal to take off and on.

At this moment my first thought was the drive shaft. Remove a piece of the drive shaft, can't go anywhere if the wheels won't turn. It's a nice start!

My other thought was, park the Jeep on a concrete slab (you kind of have to own your own property for this) and make those posts that come up out of the ground. The ones that will destroy your car if you drive into them. Make it so that they're on both the front and back of the Wrangler. So that way if anybody does even get into your vehicle and get it started they're not going to be able Go anywhere because you'll have these giant 8-in wide steel posts blocking the vehicle in. I was thinking four of them, one for each corner, but you might be able to get away with just two.

Another thought is to anchor your Wrangler to the driveway itself. I don't know a lot about anchoring bolts. But you definitely want something that isn't going to come out of the ground. So maybe concrete in a thick steel plate with a a hook-eye attached to it. But then the only issue becomes where do you hook it on the Wrangler that doesn't tear off and cost more in the long run?

And then there's the issue of something that would stop the vehicle from being stolen while you're at a hotel or at an Airbnb or something where you're not home?? For this I was thinking either a really large steel bar that you can put through the wheels, locking on the outside of the wheels close to the frame of the vehicle on the rear wheels. In an attempt to stop the wheels from spinning when you hit the skinny pedal. Maybe even two so it kind of locks the wheels from spinning in either direction, but you definitely run the risk of tearing up your wheels in the process if not everything else.

My other thought was take a really thick steel chain and wrap it through all four tires and then lock it together somewhere underneath the vehicle. Sure some bolt cutters would take it right off, but how many thieves are bringing out bolt cutters to an automotive theft?

Just some thoughts.
