Reading this sub-forum and then posting this makes me feel like I am beating a dead horse….

Anyway, 30,000 mile oil service on my ‘22 Sahara today. I bought the vehicle at 13k, did the first service at the 20k mark when the oil life indicator went off, and subsequently switched to 5k intervals. At the last service (25k miles) I added a magnetic drain plug after reading the lifter/cam failure horror stories. I have been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20 for all services until now (trying out the Valvoline Restore and Protect as its easier to find).

Anyway, first concern - there were some metal shavings stuck to my drain plug. Once the service was done, I listended to the engine for a bit, and there is definitely a ticking sound, more pronounced on the passenger side. I do hear the normal tick-like sound from the serpenting belt, but this is louder. After I cleaned off the drain plug, I examined the old oil filter and didn’t see anything abnormal. Ran the magnetic plug along the filter pleats and it didn’t pick up anything.

My wife has a ‘22 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6. and just a few more miles than me. At her 30k service, magnetic drain plug was clean. I fired up her car and listened to compare to mine - hers was much quieter and sounds like I expect a motor to sound.

CAVEAT: I’ve done driveway mechanic work since high school. I don’t proclaim to be an expert by any means, and my hearing is beat up (I’m 50). Some people state ticking can be mistaken for fuel injectors. I don’t know what one should sound like versus the other.

Since I’m under warranty (and I have an extended one on top of the manufacturers) do I go with my gut and take it in?

Absolutely, especially since the TSB just came out. Has your engine thrown any codes yet, or is it just the ticking?

Thanks for the ‘confirmation’ on this. No sparkle in the filter - no codes. Maybe some lag when I ‘punch’ it, that’s about it.

When the failure starts it will loose power on the top end of the rpm range . It is the high lift portion that is problematic and when the tick is louder above 2000 than at idle this is another way to tell if it is simply just a lagging lash adjuster or if truly the cam follower is wore out and rubbing the high lift portion of the cam lobe off. I actually had a tick a couple times .. and thought it was "the tick " but it was cold out and ultimately it was either a lagging lash adjuster or a halfway stuck injector. After it warmed up it quit and I ran some seafoam in my fuel 2 or 3 times. Amd tick is gone.
