So I warm my jeep up every morning…I never drive it until the motor oil is reading 100 degrees or higher. Then I baby it until 150 and don’t ever get into it until oil temps reach 180 or above.

That being said I came out this morning and I heard a motor tick. I was parked much closer to my wife’s rig this morning than usual so maybe just sound reverberating but it was noticeable.

I drive it to work and I took this video….i know there is “ticking” in this video but it seemed a lot more quite and I couldn’t pinpoint the side so I’m wondering if the sounds from the video are “normal “ 3.6 sounds?

Thoughts?

Jeep has 69k on it and I’m the second owner. Since I’ve owned i e maintained religiously.

Sounds like normal injector noises to me.
Man I hope you are right. Yeah I’m a bit over the top with listening and looking at the Jeep so I can be a little paranoid. Maybe that will help me in the long run lol

I havent had the tick on my 2 pentastars I've had in my rams. But have had it on my Porsche and on a BMW I had back in the day, and your engine sounds normal to me and I don't hear a tick.
Tick would (in my opinion) be a more metallic sound and likely coming from the cam's/lifters.

Appreciate the responses. Definitely freaks me out a little. I’m handy enough but don’t have a garage and it’s my daily so that would be tough to knock out. I’m going to throw another video or two in here after it has sat all night…start ups seem a little rough and the tick was loudest upon first start.

Hopefully nothing…I’m certainly not trying to make a problem where there isn’t. I called a local Jeep place and both L and R intake cams are on back order with no ETA (guy was guessing about 3 months) and I called a local off road place and they told me $5-$6k for them to do both cams…crazy!

Even mechanics have been known to mistake injector noise for cam tick and vice-versa. Injectors are noisy little suckers.

I think your engine sounds fine to me.

Now, that said, for me personally, given the huge cost and hassle of even a top-end tear-down, I carry a strong bias of "sounds great!" with me at all times.

Also, while I have the sound of my Jeep's "hum" noises dialed in to a fine art, and I can immediately distinguish tire noise from diff gear noise from pinion bearing noise; V6 ticking remains a darker shade of voodoo.

Well I took 2 more videos one yesterday after the Jeep sat for 8 hours at work and one this morning after sitting all night.

The ticking I’m hearing changes speed and pitch which is leading me to believe it’s not a cam…maybe injectors or fuel pump just cycling faster to start and then settling in as the idle regulates.

After work

This morning

Sounds fine to me. Engines make a variety of sounds. I suspect you’ve got “too many scary posts on the Internet” anxiety. 😜

Be “aware” but not “alert” if that makes sense. Enjoy your Jeep and be happy. 😎
