(Another) Axle Locker Thread

Sorry if this is a thoroughly beaten dead horse, but I've looked through a lot of the threads on here and can't find an answer.

I have a 2018 JLUR. It's out of warranty, so I'm not going to be able to just have Jeep replace the axle.

A while back my service axle locker light started coming on. It would come on, stay on for a second or two and then turn off. Not very often, but especially when going over bumps, or sometimes in the middle of shifting (I have the 6 speed manual.).

I figured it was worth a chance, so I took the rear sensor out and potted it following the instructions in these forums. The front one I couldn't get out. the screw holding it in was stripped. I figured that maybe the rear is the one that was going bad, since the front gets less wear and tear. It didn't help. The light kept coming on intermittently.

Next I installed a Z locker wiring harness Z Automotive on the front. I figured since i had potted the rear, maybe the front was the issue. It didn't solve my problem, so I installed another Z locker on the rear.

That hasn't helped either, and now the issue is becoming more severe. I'm lucky to drive for more than a couple of minutes before the light comes on and I get the ding. It stays on longer now as well. It still seems like this happens especially when shifting and now when going around corners or when the engine is working harder to accelerate or climb a hill.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

I'm a little surprised the Z auto harness did not fix your issue. Is it possible the factory harness is damaged somewhere? Coming on when shifting sounds like loose wiring.

Same thing happened to my wife’s Jeep. It was broken sensor wires, both front and rear. Strip the loom off the wires and check for breaks in the harness between the chassis and the connector on the axle. I fixed the break and all has been fine for 5k miles.

Thanks! I was wondering if it was something like this, but not sure where to look. I'll check that out next time I can crawl underneath!

Did you get this figure out? I'm going thru the exact same issue. The Z locker harness didn't work as I was getting the ding and the light on the dash quite often. I did narrow it down to the rear axle with the code reader showing C1451-11 Rear Diff position sensor-circuit short to ground. I potted both front and rear sensors and the light kept coming. I bought the new sensor kit from mopar, potted it and installed it yesterday. First ride around the neighborhood and the light came on after about 5 minutes. It comes and go as quickly as 2-3 seconds.

I'm starting to think that is the harness that is short to ground somewhere between the axle and the frame. I will look into it this week.

Check the wires in the harness, I bet that is the problem.

My locker light ended up being a couple of things.

1: My harness was also broke. I ended up scooping a new pig tail and extending my locker harness to fix it, and because the harness was too short for my rear shocks anyway.

2: I think the magnet fell off my drain plug, got chewed up, and stuck to the sensor. Whatever the source was, I had a ton of non-metallic, magnetic "paste" that had to be cleaned out. I was worried it was my gears eating themselves, but for the amount of shit in my diff, there was no unusual wear on the gears.

Once I installed the new pig tail and cleaned the shit out, my locker light stopped flashing.

There was no oil in my sensor, but I potted it anyway.
