AMP Power Running Boards
I was planning to buy and install these. I noticed in reviews on Extreme Terrains website that a few people said the new ones do not work/fit correctly based on a recent design change (the $1,599 model). Has anyone else experienced this with AMP in the past few months?
I was set on AMP due to the OBD option because I do not feel like wiring each door with a magnet sensor, now I'm wondering . .

Not sure what design change there might have been and when. I had them on my 21 and they worked just fine. You might need to look around a bit more or call them about all the options. Mine did not have the ODB or the magnetic switches. There was a minor wiring change in a connector (think it was just adding a pin). If you do go off road though I would pass on them, and just get normal sliders that have some sort of step.

I'm on my third set. The first two I returned because they included the wrong parts. I just received the newest ones two weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to install. My initial look through the parts, it appears they have sent the correct parts this time.

Like you mentioned, I went with AMP Research because they use a controller that plugs into the OBD port, and no magnetic switches.

The first set I bought back in November. They had a manufacturing date of August. I was told there was a design change that included changes to motor design and location. The first set I received had the correct motors, but incorrect mounts and wiring harness. Extreme Terrain sent out another set. no questions asked. The second set, with a September manufacturing date, had the same issues.

After the second incorrect set, I contacted AMP directly. They agreed to send me a third set, but they were waiting on parts. The third set finally arrived in January.

Coincidently, both incorrect sets had "Made In Mexico" on the box. They used to advertise made in the USA. It required several phone calls to AMP Research to keep things moving. During one phone call, I asked about the Go Rhino boards. He confirmed they are made in the same factory, but different than AMP Research products.

Thanks for the info. After doing some more research and talking with some others on another JL forum, I settled on the SoFlo model. They were having a Valentines Day sale, plus I called and got a second discount and free shipping. I'll be sure to post if they don't work out well. My final price was half the Rocksliders and I don't have rocks here . . . plus they are door triggered w/o magnets.

Looking at what you purchased, I like that SoFlo has 3 sets of brackets per side, vs 2 on the AMP Research. Also, the SoFlo motor looks tucked up a little better.

I finally got up the nerve to install my AMP Research steps tonight. It took me 2 hours to install all the hardware. I guess I'm a little faster the second time around. Tomorrow, I'll finish the wiring.

Finally got everything installed. The following is a review of my AMP Powersteps.

First, this is the third set I received. The first two sets had incorrect wiring harnesses, and or motors. The first two sets were received in November 2025. The third set didn't ship until January 19, 2026. The initial "waiting parts for 5-10 days", turned into more than a month.
Extreme Terrain, the retailer, was great to work with, but I ended contacting Real Truck, the manufacturer. Real Truck was pleasant on the phone, but missed several deadlines. I think if I hadn't made several phone calls in January, the third set would still be sitting in a warehouse.

As for the actual parts, the step surface and linkage assemblies seem well made of quality materials. The motors have plastic housings, and kind of hang down more than I like. The reason that it took 3 sets to get it right was they redesigned the motor and mounts, seemingly forgot to redesign the wiring harness.

I ran into 3 minor problems during installation. There are two possible positions to mount the motor, and the instructions say to mount the motor in the bottom set of three holes. With parts in hand, it only fits if I mount the motor in the upper set of holes.

The wiring harness on the drivers side was too short to reach the motor. I had to add about one foot of wire. I routed the harness on top of the frame rail, instead of along side. I don't think was the cause for being too short.

The instruction had another error, besides the motor mount location. The instruction say the motor has black and red, with purple stripe wire, and the harness has orange and white, with black stripe wires. The motor wires were actually orange and white. I assumed I would connect white to white and orange to orange, BUT I was wrong. Matching wire colors made the step to go down when the door was closed, and up when the door was open. Simply swapping the wires around solved the problem.

AMP Research had a great reputation, and were made in the USA. Now they are made in Mexico, and quality has slipped. The metal parts seem well made, but I'm concerned about plastic motor housing mounted underneath. With the design change, they're still working out the kinks. I feel nobody has actually installed any of these since the design change, or at least compare the instructions to the actual parts they ship.

I hope they hold up, but they weren't plug and play. I'm disappointed that it took 2 1/2 months since the initial purchase, required installing two different sets, and multiple phone calls before I actually got a set that works.

I have the AMP Research XL model on both of our jeeps. Look great and work great. No issues at all and I’ve had them on my 21 Willys 4dr for a few years now.

I just looked at the XL version. The installation manual shows a different style motor. This motor has a separate cover and tucks out of the way better than the motor I have. The motor and motor installation was my biggest complaint. The rest of the parts are good.

AMP also makes a smart version. It uses the same controller that I have, Guess what? The AMP Research app works with my steps too.

Well, I finished the SoFlo running boards yesterday. I'm super happy with them. They plug into the bus bar behind the glove box and activate when any door is opened - no door sensors to run. They have three brackets per side, with the center one being the motor. They came with a wire harness that had plenty of length. Everything was pretty much plug and play to include the four LED lights. I ordered them last Thursday and they were in my driveway THE NEXT day. Nothing was damaged or missing. They tuck up pretty tight to the body, so you don't see the pinch weld.
I paid less that $1,200 with discounts and they were super easy to work with. No directions are in the box, you download them from their website.

They look good, and definitely tuck in better than my AMP Research steps. The gap is wide enough that I can fit my hand between the steps and the body.

I can't get to the instruction page from behind the work firewall. I assume there is a manual override for when the doors off, or other times you may not want them to deploy?

Also notice they deploy and retract with the key fob, do they also open and close anytime you open and close a door regardless of locked/unlocked?

There is no override that I know of except to pull the fuse under the hood if you removed the doors completely. Mine only deploy/retract when a door is opened or closed. My fob doesn't make them do anything when you lock or unlock the doors.

Could always wire my own switch into the cab I suppose.

The video showed him click unlock twice and they deployed, click lock twice and they retracted. Have you tried a double click?
