But, of course, we do need it! Hell, when I drive to the back of our property it's useful to know the altitude there versus at our house. I've climbed the hill a couple times and I'm obviously old AF, but it's useful to know how far up it is.

those gps coords should give an altitude of like 10' above sea level? does it change while driving, as compared to being parked?
Correct. Yes it changes, but it never shows anything but significantly below 0.

Guys thanks for all the helpful input and discussion.

No it's not important, but my anal and empirical self is just not happy that I have a device giving me obviously wrong readings.

I believe there is a calibration procedure you can follow.
Maybe its just the compass. I don't know.

GPS satellites are not related to sea level. It uses a mathematical ellipsoid which approximates the earth’s surface.

but you are correct in that the vertical accuracy is about 10’ in this situation at best.

Bummer. My 2023 Rubicon with the 8.4 is spot on in the Navigation app, Offroad pages, or using CarPlay apps. I check it often and it's always reading as it should. New radio so maybe an update to correct the calibration?

When I added the factory nav system to my 2005 GMC Sierra I had to drive in figure 8's to get the GPS calibrated correctly. I would have guessed the satellites would triangulate and do that for me. As poorly as the Sierra turned I needed a lot of parking lot to complete the process.
