Accel/decel clunk?

Does it kind of sound like something in the backseat or storage compartment is rolling around? If so, I hear this when I stop/decelerate at very low speed.

Mine clunks and sometimes it's violent enough to shake the vehicle. When I notice it most is after a warm start and then taking off. I have always believed it to be the transmission. It feels like what you'd experience if you were in neutral applying some throttle and then drop it into drive. THUMP and then it jerks.

I haven't had them look at it yet because it doesn't happen often enough.

Anyone ever get this resolved? I began noticing it last week. I can accelerate, then let off the gas and there's a couple clunks. I read this post where someone felt loose rear control arms and tightened them up. I've scheduled to bring my JLU in this week to have that noise checked out on mine. It sounds like it is getting worse. Taking off from a stop, I definitely am hearing something, which sounds from the rear, but it is hard to tell.

Years ago I had a 1994 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. I had gone on a long trip to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, when I started noticing a noise in the rear powertrain someplace. I had just changed all the oils in my entire powertrain for my trip to the park. Luckily it didn't get any worse, but as soon as I got home, I immediately brought it to the dealer, and they found out the rear differential was failing. The new oil in it was pitch black w/metal particles in it. From what I was told, there were some Jeep differentials at the time, in which it was either the pinion gears or the pins, which hold them in place, weren't heat treated properly, and so they would eventually fail. I guess there was a warning out, but no recall, and because it was past my warranty, I ending up paying for it, which I wasn't all too happy about. I went and ordered a limited slip differential for it from a local 4 wheel drive store. The one in my Jeep was just a standard one, and besides, I didn't want another Chrysler part put back into it.

I might mention, I have a Limited Slip Rear Differential in my JLU. Anyone else w/the noise have one as well?

@iflyimpilot Stock 2 Dr Rubicon(3.6 Auto) here and coming to a stop or near stop, I can hear and feel the 4-3 shift. I am hoping there is some software improvement to smoothen this out, will check with the dealer next time I take it in. Initially I thought it will improve with break-in but the sound and the harsh shift haven't improved.

unfortunately the dana 44 rear axles with limited slip are having issues where people are getting them entirely replaced

I wanted to order a Gladiator with the limited slip but I think ill just opt for the open diffs like I have in my JKU

I stopped by the dealer yesterday, we drove around, and I would completely stop and then take off, and while not as noticeable as I have heard, I was told that it was normal w/that transmission, because of the so called granny 1st gear it has.

I'll just keep an eye on it, or I should say, an ear.

It would really be nice to speak directly to an engineer at Chrysler about this.... anyone know how one might make this happen? I am going very frustrated with this issue and am worried that the longer it goes the more damage is happening to my NEW Jeep.

Did you ever find out why this was happening?

I brought my JLU in again this summer, this time everyone heard it, and they "supposedly" brought in a Jeep Rep who said that it was normal w/manual transmissions.

Bull, I've owned quit a few vehicles w/manual transmissions, including Jeeps, and it isn't normal. Of course I've never had one w/such a low first gear either, if that makes any difference.

This also doesn't sound like the transmission, but more like in the rear axle.

I've still got another year on my warranty, though I'll probably get an extended warranty before then. I hope to bring it to another dealer in order to have it checked out.

I plan to keep this Jeep for a good long time, and so I take good care of it.

Brake rotor? Interesting.. I think the source of my noise is different though, seems to be transmission related. Aside from how I described it, it's also noticeable when slowing down as the gears are downshifting from 4th to 3rd (especially when in M(manual) mode.
