Does anyone know the actual reason why our 4xe came with a smaller size gas tank compared to the gas JLUs? (17.2 g versus 21.5 g)

The tank is smaller because the area between the frame rails is filled with more equipment than is present on other wranglers. I'm sure they would have loved to keep the same part and configuration if they could help it, but modification was necessary to accommodate the added equipment.

I theorize it was because of lobbying by the convenience store cartel. The range sucks so bad, you have to stop for gas more often and you are more likely to buy energy drinks and corn nuts.

I've got a '22 2.0L JLUR and my tank is only like 16.5 gallons. I think all 2.0L motors (e-torque and non-e-torque) have smaller tanks, which I think is REALLY stupid. Now I have to carry fuel overlanding while the 3.6 people don't.

I'm actually trying to look this up, I saw it somewhere. I grabbed my manual and it says 4 door has a 21.5 gallon tank. I have a 4 door but I've never been able to fill up 21 gallons, that's for sure. I think 16 was the most and that was below E.

Looking around and thinking about it, maybe it was 18.5 gallons, I don't remember. I swear I saw the 2.0L had a smaller tank though! Just need to find where my crack head saw it!

So, after 15 gallons the 4xe gets a little scary on the interstate. I think I did 16 one time, it was on fumes and shut the engine down on the off ramp.

I ran out of fuel once within the first month of owning my Subaru. Turns out, there was a recall shortly after because the computer miscalculated range. Driving on the freeway and it said I had 90 miles left and suddenly, no power, no power steering, dead. Was definitely an interesting experience. Hit an off ramp and no where to go, just landed on the right lane of a 2 lane SUPER busy street with the wife and dog. I wasn't about to put it in neutral and push because the swell people of Madison WI are not friendly drivers, we would have died.

I'm not a 4Xe so you can kick me out of here but I did find out I guess my 2.0L does have a 21.5gallon tank.

Abraham Esporlas (1/25/2023, 6:13:37 PM): Thank you so much for waiting, Mike, I truly appreciate your time on this, and I also would like to apologize for taking so much of your time. For this, upon looking up your vehicle details on the owner's manual and our resources, we do see that your vehicle has a 2.0L l4 Engine, and for the capacity that has four (4) doors, it is 21.5 Gallons. For reference you may also look up our official Mopar Owner's Manual at: https://vehicleinfo.mopar.com/asset...ngler_4xe/P138321_22_JL_OM_EN_USC_DIGITAL.pdf I included your vehicle's year, make and model.
Abraham Esporlas (1/25/2023, 6:15:37 PM): I do hope that the answer here provides assurance to your journey and that the recall is looked into as well. Aside from this will there be anything else that I can be of assistance?
undefined (1/25/2023, 6:16:26 PM): Okay, so it is 21.5 gallons. I'm going to push the tank of gas further this time then, see if I can get it to fill up 20 gallons on my next fill up. Thanks Abraham for your help. Have a nice day.

I'm going to push it and see if I can get it to fill up 20 gallons, get that miles to empty number down to -35.

If driven like a PHEV as it was designed, the tank size is a non issue.
I mean ... kinda? The issue is that the 4xe battery provides driving range equivalent to about 1 gallon of gas driving. Yet the tank is 4 gallons smaller. Once you're going on a drive more than a couple hours (which we tend to do!) all my battery is doing is making the truck heavier. Only getting ~350 miles for a full tank is not great; that puts my realistic driving range at ~325 miles, because I'm not going to white knuckle it on E. Road trip machine, this is not.

Major first world problems, I know. We're not overlanding and it's not hard to get gas. But I'm sure Jeep would've given the 4xe more tank size if it could physically fit in the frame. The truck would be objectively better with a larger tank.

We cannot speak to ‘over landing’ but beach crawling and mountain climbing is not rated in miles to empty, but rather hours. Jeep said 3 hours of ‘crawling’. Last week at Windrock we went in full gas >1% electric, wheeled all day and 1/2 way through the day at 20% switched over to electric, ad besides 1 hill climb we had no gas use rest of the day(came out with 3/4tank) For those of u skeptics, 1 in a group of 15 used their rotopax, and another left early for fuel.

That's not really how it works though. If you leave it in hybrid mode, where it's using gas and electric, the electric motor aids the gas motor and you get a lot more range from the tank of gas and the batteries. Most seem to get at least the same range or better on long trips as we do with a 21 gallon tank. If it were a daily driver, where the jeep can be plugged in nightly, they are getting way more range than I do LOL.

A PHEV is not designed for regular cross country driving.

It takes me over 5 months to use a tank of gas.

With the same driving my identical 3.6 2018 Wrangler JL required being filled up every week or less.
