Looking at a Rubicon X Unlimited with 8 spd auto. Not planning to run bigger than 35” tires but it comes with 488 gears prefer 456 which is what I have in my 84 CJ7 with LS1. Is it worth the extra bucks or should I keep looking? Think it’ll affect mileage much? If I hate it can I regear to 456 by changing ring and pinion or does it require a carrier change as well?

4.88s won't be too much for 35s. The JL engines have less torque than an LS and the JL is heavier so they need a little bit more help.

Swapping ro 4.56s is such a small change you won't notice it. But if you did, you wouldn't need a new carrier. Just gears and an install kit.

Don’t think it should change much but if you’re unhappy you can re-gear front and rear with 456 gears. That’s all that changes

check Tyler Potter’s youtube channel. He bought a 2024 with factory 4.88 35”s . I’m pretty sure one of his videos talks about mpg.

i have 4.88s and ran both 35s and 37s. going from one to the other and back, i didnt really notice a difference except maybe a little quicker acceleration (by a hair). mpg wasnt much different.

at least 4.88s will give you the option in the future if you change your mind, as many, many people do.... they should also make your rig even better for crawling.

I have a 22 XR with 4.56 and 35's. I think 4.88 would be better honestly.

The Rubicon X with 35 inch tire package comes with 4:56 with option to go to 4:88

They do not come default with 4:88, you must select that option. Otherwise, it will have 4:56 by default.

Go with the 4.88s. My 2023 JLUR has 4.88s with the factory 33s and I love the gearing. 35s would probably be perfect with 4.88s
I'm in that same boat with you. I got 4.88 thinking I'd be going to 315s almost right away... here I am a year and a half later, still on the OEM Wildpeaks, and still liking the combo better than I expected to.

I think it's a much better bargain as a standalone option than as an add-on to an already expensive package which includes 4.56 gears.

same setup here, love the 4.88 with 35s. 4-low locked into first gear the thing would walk up a wall

and it’ll do 80+ down the highway all day
