I’ve been paddle shifting since I bought it and now I am at 13K miles. On the rare occasions where I am in automatic the Jeep seems to be trying to match my manual shift points. The engine is also popping and snapping in auto, which it did not used to do. All to the good, it makes me think my Jeep and I vibing or maybe the Jeep is learning?

Pretty much all modern autos, including the ZF ones in the Jeep are "learning" transmissions. Not surprised at all it would use your manual shifts as training data, but it's gotta be kinda spooky.

The 25 year old ZF five speed in my boxster was the first TCU to use fuzzy logic learning of the driver behaviors. ZF has been at this a long time.

In the '01 996 I had, the manual patterns were definitely learned into auto mode.

I need to pull the batt cable and reset mine then... have been in mileage mode I guess. I need OR+ in order to get aggressive shift patterns here, especially the "blaaatt" at WOT shift between 1-2, 2-3 etc.

Yup, the transmission learns how you like to drive and adjusts accordingly. Pretty cool, huh?
Part of what finally brought me into the automatic world after 30 years of manuals.
The self-learn feature in my 2020 GC transmission absolutely sucks. No updates available.
Going back to a manual JL. Like you - long term 3 pedal driver.

What sucks about it? I like how the trans learns to do what I want it to do. You may fight with it at first but soon enough you end up winning.

I was in OR+ the other day, then downshifted and floored it to race a mustang. The Jeep let out a scream like the t-rex in jurassic park. Anyone else getting colossal roars outta their Jeep?

My driving style is mostly passive; highways and interstates, very little in town/city. In instances where merging is involved, I expect the vehicle to get up and go, without any significant abusive behavior. However, after deceleration (interstate off ramp), followed by merging into traffic; the JEEP continued to decelerate albeit me being off the brake. Upon depressing the go pedal, there is zero reaction of just the slightest speed increase until I press the go pedal further down and the transmission just shifts 3 gears down and engine screams.
Went to dealer twice asking for updates - no luck. They ‘reset’ the self learn and the JEEP was very pleasant to drive for a few hundred miles. Then the lagging/erratic down shifts start again.
Easy part throttle downshifts just do not exist. GC has selections on dash for Econo/Econo Off/Performance. First two no real difference except with EO it doesn’t go into 8th at 60mph unless cruise is engaged. Performance will not shift until 3000rpm are reached, under even the slightest load (useless).
Recently had a friend who owns a 2018 JL run an errant with my GC. He came back and handed me the keys, saying he had zero desire to drive my GC again.
I’ve come to the conclusion it is me. Greatly looking forward to a three pedal JEEP again.

Yeah, I think that's just your GC. I wouldn't blame it on the type of trans. The auto trans does engine brake like a manual, which is nice in my hilly neighborhood. But you shouldn't have to fight your way out of it.

It may be your part throttle downshifts that is confusing it. That's something that typical auto trans drivers don't do. I do part throttle downshift in manual shift mode, which I'm sure it incorporates into its learning. Not that much In Drive. You could be teaching your trans that part throttle during downshift only means go up a few gears and stop engine braking, not accelerate. Then when you want to accelerate you're fighting your way out of it.

IDK, just guessing.

Certainly good ideas. Not blaming the trans in itself. It is a trouble free unit. The programming in the GC appears to be done by a team who’ve never driven a car ?
Been manually shifting it here and there; and it is interesting that without moving the throttle further down, and just manually shift it down one gear, it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Again, not going to fight it any longer. 60k miles in a bit over two years is long enough. The JL is on its way. The 2.0 with ZF 8 spd seems to be a sweet combo, based on many opinions I read on this forum.
