Not necessarily. Some Toyota's had unintended acceleration events. One was an off duty police officer. Toyota now programs all cars to observe the brakes over go pedal. Does Pedal Commander over ride Toyota instructions? Does Stellantis have the same computer controls that favor brakes over acceleration?
I never understood why the driver, a California Highway Patrol officer, and his brother in law and another occupant (also CHP)—who spent their careers in automobiles—did not think to put the Lexus in N and let the engine RPMs be damned. IIRC, the driver and his wife had the wherewithal and time to call 9-1-1 and report their car was experiencing an uncontrolled acceleration (a recording later shared with media), not that 911 dispatch could do anything about their predicament. https://www.caranddriver.com/featur...oyotas-unintended-acceleration-scare-feature/ https://www.nbcsandiego.com/local/feds-confirm-stuck-gas-pedal-caused-lexus-crash/1886079/

Unfortunately this Jeep driver also did not think to put it in N after he was 180 deg. from his intended direction. Jeeps can be repaired/replaced, but three lives were nearly lost here.

BTW, the Jeep to the left has a Rhino Rack wrap across it, FWIW.

This was 2 miles from my house.... facts aren't quite right. Driver was the CHP Officer. Passengers were his wife, juvenile daughter, and brother in law who was not CHP. The BIL is the party on the released 911 call.

What do you think caused this? I had a Pedal Commander start accelerating on me recently it was crazy! All of a sudden the check engine light came on and the Jeep started accelerating. I had to throw it in neutral and hit the brakes. I removed it right then and there. Not saying that is what happened here though. If this is a repost, my bad just delete it.

One thing could have caused this. When the Jeep hit the bumps, at the top of the hill, or on the way down, the air bag went off. I've seen airbags break wrists, when people had a hold of the steering wheel tight. I've also seen then knock people out or hit them so hard they are dazed, and basically unaware of what happened. It looks like when the Jeeps airbag went off, it was on its own after that.

That video is crazy. Where did you see it posted? Clearly it’s on the dudes dash cam which explains the steady shot. I’m guessing the driver panicked when it went up the side hill on the way back and just lost control.

There should be a clear shot of the driver at the end of the video but you can't see who's behind the wheel. I can't tell if it's smoke inside the cabin or if it's been intentionally obscured...
I think it’s the bags/gas/dust/airborne mess from the airbag Deployment

Could be. But it still doesn't explain why the driver never hit the brake, or at least let off the accelerator until that final impact... Speaking of which... there is a person filming this (not a passive dashcam). You can tell by how the camera moves. They film that Jeep coming right at them and making that head-on collision and never flinch even as their entire Jeep is being driven backward by the impact.

There's also an odd little skip in the video around the 20 second mark. I'm leaning more toward intentional... or stupid stunt gone wrong. It's starting to remind me of the guy who made the video of his "plane crash" when he actually filmed himself intentionally crashing the plane.

As you can tell from the small snippet I quoted, I was commenting only on the difficulty seeing inside the offending jeep after the crash.

I assumed the person recording the video was trying to capture the slippery hill climb, and then continued recording assuming/hoping everything would turn out okay… right up until it didn’t.

But you may be right. People do unimaginatively stupid stuff every day. I’ve given up trying to explain a lot of what I see.

When I remark on things like this my brother reminds me that the average IQ is 100, which means an awful lot of people are at least one standard deviation below that. I’m pretty sure that puts them well below our Labrador retriever. Much of what I see makes more sense through that lens.

To be clear, I don’t think our lab would fall for most of the scams/ideas/antics I find hardest to believe.

Amazing no one got killed in this mishap. Hopefully someday the truth of why this happened come out.

Another possibility is that the owner put a kid or inexperienced driver behind the wheel and gave poor instruction from the passenger seat. I’ve seen that done with disastrous results before.

We’ll probably never know since that is a foreign video and no explanation was provided.

Watch the video again and right after impact you can see a "blue" long license plate, wonder where.

Edit: looks like "made in china" plates(beginning and at 29S in). They'll reverse engineer it.

There are a shit load of videos on youtube of peddle commanders specfically going haywire and doing things they shouldn't be. It's because they aren't wired properly and sucking power off the peddle circuit itself and causing malfunctions as a result.

Personally I think Peddle Commanders should be pulled from the market along with any others that don't have their own power source and use the peddle circuit for power. They are flat out dangerous.
Yeah, I wouldn't install that crap on my Jeep or any other vehicle!

The reason the video jiggles a bit is because someone is filming a computer screen that is running the video on it. You can see the Windows logo at the bottom of the clip at the beginning and a bit if the monitor near the end.

That makes me believe it was a mounted camera and the pulled the memory card to watch it on a computer at home.
