Sorry this may be a long rant, but I did not see anything for this code.

Back ground:
So I was out on a trail this weekend with my daughter. We live at 7,000K feet, For anyone in the Colorado Springs area we went up Mt. Herman to Rampart range Rd, then to Balance Rock Rd. to do some LIGHT off roading to a pond to go fishing. The temp was 70-75* the whole time on the trail, so not too hot. Elevation ranged from 7,784 to 9,380 (On X offroad info). We were just put putting along, so never really went above 10-15 MPH the whole time. Tire PSI was 20#. Trail time was about 3 hrs. each way with about 45 min stopped to fish (nothing was biting).

The issues:
So on the way in, while on Balanced rock rd. we stared to notice a smell...Kind of exhaust or kind of chemical... I stopped, and looked under the jeep...nothing leaking, nothing out of the ordinary. So I just assumed it's exhaust fumes since we were literally crawling along. Definitely unpleasant, but I've smelled worse. Got to the end of the trail and turned the jeep off to go fish. No issues. now for all three issues:

1. Came back and took off to head home. About 20 min into the drive back, I went to clean my front camera (not gonna lie I love having that when you cant see the trail ahead of you).... my washer fluid did not work, so I tried the wipers too... no washer flid at all.. So then I thought maybe the smell from earlier was the washer fluid, and somehow I melted the reservoir... (nope).

2. Well We kept on driving went over a few minor obstacles, and then BAM Warning Power steering overheated. Performance may be limited.... At this point I was getting kinda upset at my big bad ass jeep... turns out it was not being that tough... HOWEVER, I never felt like I couldn't turn the wheel. Well we had to get home no matter what, so we just kept on driving. Sometime on the trail the warning light went away????.

TOTAL SIDE NOTE about a week into ownership I had NO power steering for one key cycle. Leaving the store I was 100% without power steering. After manhandling it home (about 1/2 mle so not too bad LOL) Got home shut it off and restarted it. BAM normal. have had ZERO issues since. I figured ok new vehicle what ever. didnt think about it.

3. We got about half way back to the road, I aired up the tiers, and we upped the speed a bit (15-20) for the rest of the way when the trail was clear. As I was accelerating, I thought, ya know this thing is louder than It has been all day (Had it in quiet mode the whole time). Hit the exhaust button and nothing. No light on the button, and the dash said performance exhaust off (even though it was clearly on and loud).

At this point I'm pissed cause I'm going to have to take it to the dealer. We got home. and just for giggles, I shut it off, then turned it back on... Exhaust works no issue, and the washer fluid works again.... Ok so some electrical gremlin... BOOO. Well, a few hrs later took it out for a drive...Working fine. Went and grabbed my Wife from work. As we are leaving the Check engine light comes on, and the exhaust is wide open. Got back home and Code P1216 comes up. Fuel Solenoid Response time Too Short.... Well NO CLUE what that means, BUT I have the first available appt with the dealer for Sept 5th .

Interesting note, I said well I assume I should not be driving it with the check engine light. The Service advisor said for Chrysler vehicles Per the manufacturer you can drive it with the light on, AS LONG AS IT'S NOT flashing... Interesting note.

I will update this thread with the outcome. I will say I know 392's are getting the PS overheat a lot, so I figured it was only a matter of time.

and here is a pic of my 12 year old daughter driving it LOL (4Lo manual first gear...)

The PS overheat is super common on any tires over 35 inches for the 392. I've seen it happen with 35s as well but much more rare.

Out of curiously open the hood and look behind the right side cylinder head along the firewall. You will see a wiring harness with a ziptie clip on it. Make sure that harness is properly clipped onto the exposed stud sticking out of the firewall. I have seen this clip not properly pushed onto the stud which results in the harness laying on the exhaust manifold resulting in crazy electrical issues. My 2021 had it completely fallen off and my 2024 was barely attached.

Feel free to put a nut on the stud once you push it back on to prevent it from falling off in the future.

A flashing CEL means a misfire, which means engine/cat damage can occur. If it's not misfiring then the CEL isn't that big of a deal in most scenarios.

I don't see P1216 listed on all data for my jeep or Ram (hemi). I think it may be SRT specific and may be worth looking on an SRT/Challenger/Charger forum if you don't see it here.

Failures happen, but you just spent $100K for a Wrangler, and they won't take a look at it till Sept 5th, that is a bunch of BS. And the Factory wants to know why they are loosing Business..

I will go look at it tonight. Thanks for the insight.

Just a follow up. The check engine light is definitely tied to my active exhaust. If I go to quiet mode, it will not stay quiet (so I assume a vacuum leak) and then BAM check engine light. Turn it off, and at restart, turn the exahust to on (loud) and then it's fine...still have the check engine light, for about 2-4 key cycles, then its gone. Turn the exhaust to quiet...and check engine light again.

SOOO The tech is scratching his head, and they opened a star case, cause neither him or the engineers he was working with have seen this issue, and they can't figure it out. :CWL:
They have orders a solenoid that the code states is faulty. BUT just waiting on it to arrive. They may be replacing the muffler as well.

Good thing is I got it back and was able to go up into the mountains and see the trees changing color!!!!

SOOOO I finally got the jeep back in for the check engine light (code P1216).
The tech had to replace the Exhaust bypass Solenoid??? turns out on the 392 that is somewhere up behind the gas tank...so they had to pull the tank to change that out!!!

Kinda weird, but that's what the tech notes say. Just wanted to follow up so if anyone else has this issue.... it's kinda involved.
