After 2 years my stock battery died. In the days leading up to it, I started getting the “aux switches unavailable while battery charging” message. I guess the cold snap finished it off.

I’ve been monitoring my voltage for a few days since changing the battery and everything’s been normal. Voltage varies between 13.6 and 14.2 with the motor running. However, the check engine light came on and voltage started dropping while driving. At one point it hit 11.9 volts. The CEL light went off the next day and voltage is back to normal. The battery is cranking from 12.3V to 12.8V.

I have stored codes for voltage issues related to can/bus, radio, and hybrid ev sensors, but Jeep couldn’t find a problem after 2 weeks in the shop. And of course of course my warranty just expired. I just want to make sure my jeep doesn’t have a more serious and expensive problem. Is it just a glitchy ECU, voltage regulator issue, alternator? Anyone have similar issues?

Hey Ryan:

I'd load test your (one) 12V battery (on the eTorque). Many auto stores will loan you a load tester if you don't own one, which as you may know gets more to the heart of ruling in or out a battery being in good shape than simply a test of its voltage with a multimeter.

Sure, low voltage at the terminals, as determined by a multimeter, or really high voltage by the alternator to compensate for this may be signs of a bad battery, but solid voltage isn't always signs of a good one.

If the test fails then at the very least you are looking at need to replace the battery. If it passes, you know that your issues extend to other components.

If you want to check your battery make sure it is not runing. So you can see what the volts are before starting. After it starts the alternator takes over

I had a problem like that. It's most likely a bad 12V battery. I noticed it when the stop start would not work.

In today’s world of crappy batteries, you could have a bad new battery. Get it load tested to confirm its health. After that, make sure all connections are tight, clean, and in good condition.

Good luck!
