Looking for some advice /guidance… I have a 2020 Gladiator Overland. I drive it a lot (40,000 miles in a year and a half), and have it serviced regularly. I had the 2in Mopar lift installed with 32s pretty early on. I don’t think this has anything to do with my issues, but wanted to provide the additional info just in case.

I’ve had no issues until this winter.. but my power steering has started to fail. The steering wheel becomes very rigid and is almost as stiff as it is when the vehicle is off and in park.. the issue happens when I’m on the highway driving west into the mountains (I live in Colorado). It doesn’t happen every time I drive for longer periods, but it’s happening more and more frequently. From what I can tell, this issue happens when the weather is colder. It has occurred after driving at least 20 min and at speeds of 45mph all the way up to 90mph. It happens when I’m driving in a straight line, and has also happened while in A wide turn several times. I’ve been very very lucky each time the power steering has gone out.

Obviously this is incredibly dangerous. I had to wait a month for an appt, but I finally got the truck in. They’ve had my vehicle since Thursday morning (it’s now Tuesday) and this is my daily driver. I got a call today and they said they cleaned out “grinds” from around the power steering. The issue has not happened to them since they’ve had it, so they seem to think the issue is resolved…. After doing my own research and seeing that this has been an issue for other Wranglers, I’m incredibly nervous. It sounds like I need to “prove” that this is an issue for them to replace the power steering pump (which is what seems to be the fix from what I’ve read).

Does anyone have any advice? I drive long distances and drive in cold weather a lot for work and just due to living in Colorado. I’m very nervous to continue to drive this vehicle as is. I love my Jeep, but I’m at the point where I’m ready to trade it in because I don’t feel safe driving it. Once I get the vehicle back today or tomorrow (the service department agreed to drive the truck once more this evening to see if the issue occurs), I am going to look at my options. The one thing stopping me from trading it in is the worry that the next owner will get hurt / crash as a result of this issue.

Need more information?
Explain: Cleaned out “grinds” from around the power steering.

Do you have photos of these "grinds"
