found this today.

has anyone else experienced this? seems the weld didn't
have good penetration on one side, and tore off. its happened
in the last 4 months since i put a metalcloak lift on the jeep.
3 1/2" lift. everything was fine when we set up the suspension.

the jeeps an overlander, and has a fair bit of weight in it.
that being said, it goes a lot of places, but i don't beat up
my hardware.

this is the right rear corner, looking straight up from behind the
axle. the other side looks pretty good.

Yikes, I wouldn’t count on Jeep fixing that. But doesn’t look like it would be a difficult repair for someone that knows how to weld.

it's a 2018 with 114,000 miles on it. i don't expect jeep to do anything,
nor, truth be told would i really trust them to do anything.

i'm just wondering if this is a common failure.
when i first bought it new, there was a lot of weld failures on
JL steering component tabs. i weld pretty good, and one of my
closest friends is a very good certified welder, and we spent a
morning looking at every weld we could see when it was brand new.

this one looked good, and it looked fine when we hung suspension and
stuff off it four months ago. just wondering if anyone else has had this thrill.

Wow, you really put some miles on it. I have came up on some threads with weld failures, believe a recent one was front lower control arm.

Some of my welds look kinda crappy. But I don’t know much about welding.

This is a normal failure for what you're describing.

You may want to clean the paint off of the other perch, as well, and do an inspection.

However, this is a very simple fix. Clean it up and re-weld it. Run a double bead with .035" wire and turn the heat up a bit. You'll be good to go.

I've repaired many welds on Jeeps of all models from gapping cracks like what you have to cracks that you barely see any separation . It can be difficult to pin point a failure point while simply looking at them face on unless its something like you have. Meaning its what you cant see behind the weld points of the metals in the crevice. The majority I have run into give way due to normal contaminants (dirt, salt etc) that concentrate on the weld bead area and eventually make it a weak point then add the stress. All that to say is what chevymitchell said. Yes it does happen and it is common on many jeep models especially for folks who go out into the back country and who offroad alot.

Same thing happened to Litebrites Step Child about a year ago. They discover it at 3:50ish into this video...

yup. same thing. as time goes on, i'm more and more underwhelmed
with jeeps manufacturing skills. thanks for posting this. their solution
was about what i was gonna do. a piece of 7/8' unistrut is what i was
gonna use.

I’m going to put welding a crossmember to this on my list of things to do. Similar to 13:30 in the LB video above.

only if you've lost the OEM exhaust.
the light brite folks don't have anything in the way

this is what we did instead. should be fine.
a full weldment, with a gusset.
if this tears loose, i'll box the entire thing in 1/4" plate.
have someone brake me a 2" x 5" x 5' angle, and make a pattern
and plasma cut it, and do a full weldment

If this is the worse thing that happens to my rig when I get that many miles on it and as much as we wheel it, I’ll be good with that….. nice fix…..
this isn't the worst thing. this is the latest thing.

the worst thing stranded me in utah for four days waiting for fucking FCA to ship a fuel pump.

Add one more example to the cracked frame perch list. I have a June 2018 built JLUR with 65K miles on it. It's used for exploring, not rock crawling. A good portion of those miles are off-road here in Arizona. My cracks are a carbon copy of Litebrite's cracks. My 4x4 shop snuck me in the day before Thanksgiving to keep me on the road ... thanks Letzroll. Ground out all old weld material and replaced with good welds. The old welds looked a little cold and stopped right at the end of both brackets. It's no wonder they cracked.

I know this is an old thread but it’s spot on what I found on mine yesterday. Mine is a 2021 with 32k miles on it.

And where it ties into the crossmember:

Since it’s a diesel the exhaust runs down the passenger side.
