Hi all! I'm new to the forum, hoping to get help from @JeepCares . I own a 2018 JL Wrangler, purchased in 2019, currently has 52000 miles and the engine (2.0 Turbo) needs to be replaced. Of course it is out of warranty and I just paid it off recently. I've owned a Grand Cherokee & a Durango in the past and had just bought a pre-owned 21 Durango so I've liked Jeep/Dodge for quite some time but this has quickly changed my opinion of the Jeep product. Engines should not fail this quickly. Also parts are backordered so I'm not sure when I may even see my Wrangler again. So frustrating...

horrible luck mate, but if its out of warranty what do you expect the manufacturer to do exactly?

totally agree engines should last longer but the more complex something is the more likely it will break down and turbos are complex. there needs to be more options without them.

So what's wrong with the engine?

What is wrong with it? You burn it up? Throw a rod?

Mechanic found an oil leak, took it to the dealer, they found oil leaking from either the head or timing cover. 2 cylinders with scoring on the walls after compression test and bore scope.

I was hoping that the manufacturer would back their product and help me out but from what I've read, I'm stuck with a bill I can't afford and a vehicle that I can't drive for the foreseeable future.

Sh$t happens...

Out of warranty is out of warranty.

Try finding a used engine at a wrecker.

Hate to say it, but you might be hunting a new engine.

I know a lot of shops can rebuild or source parts for the Pentastar, but I don't know what all is available with the 2.0.

Jeep Cares tends to be anything but caring with major issues, more so out of warranty. If you have good service records and no abuse, they might meet you somewhere in between. I have done that before with manufacturers when a failure seemed to be totally ridiculous. It can't hurt to try, but don't get too excited.

Can you give details as to what happened? Needing a "new engine" is a bit nebulous, does it have a bad cam or an extra inspection port somewhere? If you can get by with a new head, that is almost a win in some ways.

We have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4WD (4 Cylinders N 2.0L DI Turbo DOHC 122 CID) which also needs a new engine. Our Jeep was leaking coolant and the service department had to take it completely apart to determine the cause. I don’t really understand the cause, however. The engine is on backorder until mid-July!!! Luckily we have an extended warranty but it only provides a rental for 5 days. Our Jeep has been at the dealership since 4/24. We have had no luck with Jeep Cares.

If you search the inter web there may be known problems with that engine in which a design defect is causing premature failure. If so you might have a case for goodwill.

You would still be stuck with the same bill for labor but a reman engine from a legit seller would be more cost effective and are generally available.

I’m not as familiar with that engine vs my 3.6L but I would agree that 50K-odd miles is way too soon for an engine failure

We have a well maintained Jeep Wrangler that currently has over 240K miles on the engine. Expecting Jeep to pay for a 7 year old engine that was not maintained and lasted less than "normal" is like Jeep asking me to pay them more money since my engine has lasted longer than normal.

If your so called mechanic can't fix an oil leak, is this who has been maintaining it for you?

What is actually wrong with your engine? An oil leak? Just fix it.

I'm sorry to hear this, OP, and not just because I also have a 2.0. And I agree that an engine shouldn't fail that quickly so I'd be curious to know why this one did. But I think asking Jeep to "back their product" is a moot point. They did back their product... for the entire length of the warranty.
