For those of you who have gone from a past year's 3.6L to a 2.0, how does the maintenance compare?
I see the oil filter is a canister on the bottom vs the cartridge on the top of the 3.6. Not sure what to think of that right now. It is a bit exposed to trail damage, but still easy to change out, and also doesnt have that cockamamie leaky, plastic oil/coolant cooler that I had to replace
Whats a spark plug change look like? Do I have to remove the whole intake like my stupid 3.6?
Thermostat? Coolant drain? Tranny fluid drain?
Any other oddities?

JK has been easy'ish to work on, but some things are a royal PITA

The 2.0 will be easier for comparable maintenance such as spark plugs, oil changes slightly messier.
It is direct injected though and should have a good intake valve cleaner run through it every so often.

I've got an '18 JLU w/ 3.6, my wife has a '22 JL w/ 2.0. I felt like the oil change was easy on both, but the filter change was much easier on the 3.6 since it's right there on top. Haven't done any other maintenance so I can't advise.

sure, but you still have to pull the drain plug.
You can pull that plug and get zero oil on you at all. I'll take a drop in filter any day, much simpler IMHO. But hey I haven't changed the oil on the 2.0....

sure, but you still have to pull the drain plug.
Unscrew the drainplug ever so carefully then drop it in the bucket right at the last second then spill hot oil all over your arm. At least that's how I like to do it.

I don’t know what sort of trick I’m missing, but I’ve never been able to drop a drain plug without it spilling all over my hand or arm.
I put a fumoto valve on our jeeps and would never, ever change oil again without putting one of those on. Zero spill.
Same with cartridge/canister, there’s always a little spill with canister under the car, but I can usually get zero mess changing the cartridge on top.

open oil cap to release pressure, open fumoto valve with hose into jug under car, let drain. Open cartridge and change filter, close fumoto, put in oil. Done. Maybe one or two paper towels worth of drips and dirty hands.

You have heard of vacuum oil extraction right?

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben-parts/65-liter-fluid-extractor/011885sch01a/

Learned that trick with BMWs and VWs. Those oil changes are like working a rubics cube. But, sucking the oil out through the oil level hole is easy

But I admit, if my vehicle is under warranty, it is, the dealer changes the oil. Wait for deals and it can be done for not much more than doing it yourself. Then there is proof an oil change was done under warranty

On the 2.0, good beemer mech said with direct injection, change your oil more, like every 4000 miles more, dont extend to 15,000.

I went so far as to add a drain hose run through skid plate to make sure all the oil didnt end up on skid plate like it did once from dealer.
