I don't see how it can be that sluggish with 35's. Rubicons already have a higher gear ratio than my Sport S. It should have no problem pushing 35's. I have an automatic but my rig runs great with 35's. I plan to regear when I upgrade to 38's, but have no reason to change the gearing with my 35's.
There must be a more easy solution to your problem than regearing or downsizing. Maybe the throttle accelerator that the one of the other guys recommended or upgrading the air intake or exhaust to get a minor HP boost.
I have wondered if it would be better to take off the Nittos and add K02 to save 12 pounds per tire but was told it wouldn’t make much difference.

I have a Sport S and I slapped on a set of 315/70/17 for about a month now. I do feel the sluggishness; however not to the point of intolerable. I can still use the 6th gear on the highway (above 65mph). So maybe for me re-gearing isn't that necessary.

The tires make the JEEP looks some much cooler, so I am NOT going back to stock either :)

Yeah I'm running 35 in Nitto trail grapplers myself.
I would be surprised if 48 lbs would make that much difference as well.
maybe instead of going down, you should go up to 37's and then regear haha:)

Probably trying to drive in 6th gear on the interstate, 6th on the manual trans has been reported to be pretty unusable.
6th gear is not unstable- it is technically an overdrive

Whoops.. looks like I caused some confusion. I am referring to 305 65 17s as 33x12. It is exactly 12” wide and close enough to 33 that that’s what it’s called.

Compared to stock rubi tires, they are slightly taller and 2” wider (my bad - I said 3”). Anyway, I understand the added width also adds weight, but I assume it’s less than going from stock 33” talk to 35”. My assumption is based on my experience and that my 33x12 perform perfectly on my Sport S with 3.45 gears. Albeit auto.

I have 35s on 3.45 gears and it's not that bad. This is the first time I've heard of anyone unhappy with 35s on 4.10 gears. Maybe sell the JL and get a sports car, Speedy. :giggle:

I'm in the same boat but the manual is a totally different animal. I am surprised though it's that bad. Rev it out a bit in 1st and 2nd. The 3.6 has a wide power band and doesn't mind being revved a bit.

Mine is a manual, too. I believe it's better than an auto in that you can select your own shift points and "gearing" any time you wish. Need more power? Downshift!

35's on a stock Rubi should be fine

Sluggish accelerating in 6th offcourse

Stay away from 6th for picking up speed and keep as is :)

i notice the sluggishness when taking off from a stop. It's just feels heavy. Plenty of jeepers would live with it probably. But it's bugging me. Once you are moving it's fine. MY hubby wants me to regear because he fears I will not be happy going back to stock tires. I had a plan in mind when I bought the thing but I didn't know all of the details of gears and whatnot.

If this thread proves anything is that it all comes down to what you can tolerate. There are people on here that drive their Rubi on 37s with the stock gears and find it perfectly find while others throw on 35s like the OP and find it sluggish. I find it sluggish with the 33s. Lol

My gut feeling is that you won't be happy with a regear and it will still feel "heavy," maybe even more so has yourvshit points will be earlier.

I couldn’t tolerate 35’s on 4:10’s (auto). It didn’t feel sluggish to me, it was the fact that the trans rarely used 8th on the highway, sometimes not 7th. That’s not the way it’s supposed to work. To each their own.

OP, if you like the bigger wheels and tires, keep them. Re-gear and don’t look back.

Stock rubicon tires are 285/70R17. That's about 11.2" wide, compared to a 33x12.50 which would be about the widest available 33" tire, thats not a lot different. The problem is that you gain almost nothing by going to a wider tire of equal height.
