So today it's a little on the cold side. I jumped into the Jeep to grab some lunch. Pulled out of my neighborhood onto the highway and get up to 60mph. The car in front of me decides to pretty much stop in my lane. Very little time to react, I try to turn into the lane to my right and the steering feels really stiff like the tire is against something then suddenly there is no resistance causing me to overcorrect and nearly lose control of the Jeep. Sitting on the side of the road, the steering feels normal. I speed back up and as I get up to around 50-60mph the steering suddenly feels very tight again, not wanting to turn more than 15-20 degrees, then it goes away and a bit further down the road it suddenly comes back. I think Litebrite had a video of this a while back. I've never had any steering issues with my JL. It drives absolutely great but I have to say this is TERRIFYING because it felt like someone was holding the steering wheel to prevent me from turning and then suddenly just let go causing over correction. Does anyone know if this issue has ever been resolved or what the cause is?

Didn't they have a recall on that steering box?

I just want it fixed. I have too much work into the thing now to consider lemon lawing it.

So your steering has always been good? Did you ever have excessive play in the steering wheel or wandering in the lane like so many are reporting? Maybe your steering box is adjusted too tight.

Maybe file a complaint with NHTSA to expedite a response from FCA.

Mine has always been perfect. Even with 37x13.5's I can go hands off the wheel at 70mph with no concerns. I've driven it from Dallas to Alabama and it was one of the easiest drives I've ever had. I've seen the threads on all the steering issues, but mine has always had perfect steering.

Not sure what you mean. The JL's steering is far better than the JK's ever was. Honestly if I was going to compare it to something it would be my wifes 2014 Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel. My JL steers about like her GC only her GC' doesnt have the steering go back and forth between hard and easy all the sudden. I strongly suspect this is s somehow temperature related as after the Jeep warmed up a bit, it seemed to do it less and less and prior to today it was 70+ and it's never done it prior to that.

It seems many members with loose wandering steering have reported their steering feels better when it’s colder outside. Could be your steering box is adjusted too tight and you are seeing the effects during the colder weather? Damn that new aluminum steering box!

Hmmmmmm . "temperature related" .

Do you mean engine temperature ? It works well before the engine reaches mid-point temperature ?

Or , outside temperature ? It works less well when the outside temperature is over 90 degrees ; and works better when outside temperature is snowing cold ?

Why would steering be affected by either temperature , if it is mechanical ?

Hmmmmmm.

You mentioned colder weather ?

He said he sees the effects when Jeep gets warmer ?

Why would aluminum matter ? Colder or warmer ?
