OK, so now my 22 JLU battery is dead. What is the recommended battery to replace it with? I'd like something that fits without modification. Then I would pull the fuse and leave the aux battery disconnected from the negative terminal and I am good?
This photo is a couple of years old, so the price has gone up - Walmart, 4-year warranty, 850 Cold Cranking Amps. It is an H7/Group 94 battery, the same as came in my 2020 Jeep Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator (with aux switches). Some Jeeps come with H6 batteries. The battery tray in those Jeeps are the same as the battery tray in mine, except for a removable spacer for the smaller battery.

You can actually use the same size battery that is (OEM) unless you have light bars. and other parasitic loads. Then you want to go with the Higher CCA like the H7. I pulled the neg. line on Aux and pulled fuse 42, been running the same battery for over a year with no issues. its when your running a bunch of stuff it would cause loading issues and prematurely run your battery down over time.

I paid 189 a few weeks ago for the same battery so its not that much more expensive which is nice.

I just picked up a Duracel H7/group 94 from Batteries Plus. 4 year warranty and about $250. I hate WalmMart/Sams Club.

I selected an Interstate H7 AGM to replace the OEM H6 battery.

Removing a press-fit spacer on the bottom of the battery tray allows installation of the slightly larger H7, if circumstances warrant.

I isolated the ESS battery concurrent with the H7's installation.

So if i disable the aux battery the ESS would still work but would use the main battery? Correct? What would be the harm if this happens?

On my Jeep, I pulled the negative lead to the Aux Battery and pulled fuse F42. I was surprised when I took it for a test drive. The jeep actually shut off at the first stop light- WTF.. I pushed the ess button stepped on the gas and the Jeep started, and I have never had to push the button again. It just stays off ( that is what disabling the power control relay does), pulling fuse 42 doesn't allow it to change states. No more Aux Battery on my Jeep, runs great, no issues..

Ok so this info is different from what i read?? Others stated that we would still have to push the ESS button to keep it off

The ESS system is in play even if you just have one battery. All of criteria required for the stop/start to work are still part of the process. One of the things that can make the stop start not work is a poor or discharged battery. There is a longish list of other items that also come into play.

The Jeep design has the 2 batteries operating as one in every circumstance except when there is a stop/start event (ex: stopped at a traffic light). While the motor is off during a stop/start event, the small battery powers parts of the Jeeps electrical system. When the stop/start event ends (normally by releasing the brake pedal), the 2 batteries are joined together for a restart.

The best guess for why Jeep comes with 2 batteries is that there exists the possibility of a single battery falling below voltage thresholds during a start, causing a reset to some of the black boxes that control the systems. No one I can find has reported a problem that was caused by running one battery.

I run both of my 2020 Jeeps with just one battery.

I guarantee it works fine. It takes 5 minutes to try and if you dont like it, 5 minutes to put the Aux battery back into service. Push the ESS button to off and you will never have to push it again.

Out of curiousity, what would happen if someone disconnected the wrong ground? Wouldn’t the jeep not start and they would just connect the other ground? Or would it do some damage?

Disconnecting the "wrong" cable (the main body ground cable) results in the Jeep having no power at all.

That is correct, BUT you will never have to push it again. Once its is pushed it will maintain that setting. Like I say 5 minutes to test, if you dont like it or ot doesn't work on your Jeep for some reason, 5 minutes to change it back, what could it hurt?

By the way it is the smaller of the two cables on the negative terminal.
