Ok, so I have an update, but not one most of you will like. I did not get any of the bolts off and I'm pretty sure it's because I bought a cheaper impact wrench that only has 500lbs of torque.

Before anyone says I should have bought a Dewalt or Milwaukee or whatever that has torques in the millions, let me explain my use case. After this, I don't have any major upgrades planned. Just some ditch lights, bumpers and front & rear diff skids. So, my thought is, I don't need to spend hundreds of dollars right now for top quality. Only one of those upgrades could make this thought process backfire, the diff skids, but I won't know until it's time. Plus, I live in a small townhouse with a one car garage, don't have a lot of room.

My shop charges $130 per hour, which is about how long it will take to install both skids. That is half the price of one of the good guns and will still need batteries.

While it sucks because I definitely want to have the ability to do more to the Jeep, I'm fine with only being able to do 50% of the work right now. It's 50% more than I used to do before getting the Jeep. I'm happy with this decision for now and know that I could change my mind in the future and will accept that $130 loss 🤷‍♂️

nothing wrong with a man knowing his limits. I do think if you buy some ramps and a nice breaker bar you will be able to do it all. once you get the bolt broken loose with the breaker bar you can than use your impact to spin it off the rest of the way.

Just to be clear, I am only limited because of the tools lol. I know this is something I have the ability to do. Just don't think the investment is worth it at the moment knowing my future plans for the Jeep.

Phase II of the build will be lockers, regear and most likely new front axle. All of those will require going to a pro, so again, I just don't see the investment being worth it right now.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news and all...

But they're all overrated, every single one of them.

The only real difference between cheap and expensive is how overrated they are.

But you don't have to take my word for it check this channel out.

Over rated at 1500ftlbs should be able to break any bolt torqued to spec on the Jeep loose though. We are talking 200ftlbs needed, maybe a bit more. Nothing on the Jeep should ever need 400+ let alone 1500.

Lol, I broke the bolts loose using hand tools the first time... But I'm kinda large and have been turning wrenches professionally my whole life.

Cool video. i guess I’m still skeptical until I see it loosen a bolt confirmed with a torque wrench to be tightened at 190 foot pounds.
My mustang wheels were 150lbs and it broke those off with ease. I'd imagine 190 will take a few strikes to start moving. It uses a centrifugal hammer that strikes once it gets to a certain rpm.

I have a trick for getting really tough bolts to break loose. Just position your hands in a way that when you are pulling really hard and the nut finally breaks loose you will smash the back or your hand or your thumb into something really hard/sharp/pointy etc. Works every time!

Also, to prevent the other side from turning you can use a combo wrench plus a strap lashed from the wrench to the frame somewhere nearby. Takes a moment to set up but once it's there then you only have one end of the bolt to worry about.
I either wedge a big breaker bar/similar size ratchet against the ground, or stick a combo wrench against the control arm with a wood block in a way that I can raise or lower the suspension to get it out of there. Depends on which LCA bolt I’m torquing.

210 lb-ft for TF LCAs from below chest height on the ground SUCKS. Need to get my bigger ramps back…

Mine will zip them right off. Like I wrote earlier, my bud loosens the bolts on his stump grinder that are torqued to 450 ft-lbs. with his Milwaukee 1/2 impact gun. Berries state does make a difference.

If you are going to buy a tool, buy it the first time you need it (if not before). If you buy it the second, third, or later time you'll feel stupid for not buying it the first time and having paid someone else to do the job, or for struggling through what could have been an easy job. You may not yet have a known future need for it but there will probably be one and when that happens you'll wish you had bought it.
