I don't do my banking on my uConnect, do you? ?Hopefully you realize that security vulnerabilities are frequently resolved in those operating system and firmware updates. But maybe you do all of your finances and banking in person.
And if something like the remote connected services ever becomes vulnerable, such an update should be provided for free to anyone still shelling out the cash for the subscription with warranty or not, and the functionally should otherwise be completely disabled for those that aren't subscribers (ie, the service simply shouldn't allow for any operations whether from the consumer or from a hacker, virus, etc). Whether or not that's actually the case, I'm really not sure.
I'm all for more software updates being provided to consumers at no extra cost for a much longer period than the initial 3-year warranty, as that ultimately provides for a better product and an overall better brand image for a manufacturer that takes pride in fixing problems that shouldn't have been there in the first place. But as things are now, it's really not feasible for the consumer to randomly pony up a few hundred bucks for each update out of warranty, when the problems being corrected aren't always readily apparent.
For a company that once upon a time provided a free lifetime drivetrain warranty, I'm still a bit surprised that free lifetime software updates still aren't a thing. I know it's still an added expense for the manufacturer, but comparably a much cheaper one (and a good excuse to get customers into the dealership for "free" diagnostics/inspection for other potentially needed maintenance).
