Was this a drunk driver? Very weird how they hit the car in front and then you.
Excessive speed for traffic flow. A buddy of mine and I were in his car when this same thing happened to us in the 90's. Totaled out his 5L Thunder chicken. The at fault driver totaled out 4 cars, not including his own.

For some reason, they didn't notice traffic stopped in front of them, panic braked, attempted to swerve into the opposite lane of traffic to avoid rear ending the vehicle in front, clipped them anyway, and took out the OP in the process.
Its much better to rear end another vehicle then it is to hit it head on...

Tired again
Ok a year ago today, August 18, 2022 in LESS than a second, from when the driver of the other vehicle crossed the double yellow line and hit me head on, totaled out my 2006 TJ Sport. I know there is a lot of discussions on here pro and con. Once the viewed was viewed by the police and insurance, they had zero doubt on who was at fault. Just FYI, I walked away with minor injuries, and before Thanksgiving of last year had my 23 JL Sport Reign!
What kind of dash cam is that? Quality video...

Glad you were able to walk away from that crash. I’ve been thinking about getting a dash cam. Any recommendations - from anyone - on a good cam that doesn’t break the bank?

I use a Rexing.
Rexing V1P Max 4K UHD Dual Channel Dash Cam 4K 3840x2160 Front + 2K Rear with Wi-Fi and GPS

It is very clear (4k and 2k) and doesn't break the bank. They have a 3 channel model to install a cab camera, but I don't see a need for it.

On sale now. IMO, one of the best on the market and it won't break the bank.

What I think is odd is seeing people talking on their phone, held in front of their face like eating a slice of pizza, yet have a vehicle new enough that it undoubtedly has hands-free connectivity.
This is exactly what we face as first responders. Driver inattention is by far the leading cause of accidents these days. It tops DWI by a long shot, in fact, I don't recall the last DWI we were called to where it involved either serious injury or another vehicle. Most of the time they are off to one side of the road or the other, into a tree or some other immovable object.

Glad everything went well for you but I doubt there would have been any problem determining fault in that even without a dash cam.

You'd think so, but from personal experience, people can't be trusted. Thus the enduring value of dash cameras.

A few years ago, I got t-boned by someone who ran the Stop sign at the end of the street they lived on. During our initial phone call, the rep at the offender's insurance company confirmed that he correctly accepted liability for the collision, after I provided all relevant details.

During our follow-up phone call, when I expected a settlement offer, the same rep stated that the other driver subsequently withdrew his original admission of liability. After some not-insignificant effort on my part, which shouldn't have been necessary, the settlement offer was finally extended and I was able to close the books on the matter.

There's additional detail that would provide relevant context regarding the at-fault driver's behavior, but even an objective retelling would trigger the sensitivities of site mgmt. and possibly earn me a vacation. So, fill in the blanks as you might guess here.

Yikes glad you were ok after that hit. Looked brutal.

I was sideswipped a couple of months ago and decided to get a dash cam after that.

I bought the Galphi It's 2k but looks pretty good. With an Amazon lightening deal the dash cam and the SD card were $50 total. I have it wired into my cigaratte lighter so it starts recording once I turn on the ignition.

Do you have to use the app with that one or can you just set it up to loop record on the SD card?

It has an iphone app and it is always recording and once it runs out of space on the card it will start overwriting old videos. You can also set in the app how long you want the videos to be. I think I have mine set to like 2 minutes then it starts a new video.

Audi guys are big into the dash cam. They recommend a mirror mount system and you can get a wire tap system that gets power from the powered rear view mirror.
