The revisions I mentioned above are just a portion of what was changed within the 3.6 pentastar, and it gained roughly a 1-2 mpg improvement in fuel economy. It could've been more, but at the same time, they have to also be concerned with the engine running as clean as possible to meet federal requirements. To accomplish that, they set the engine up to want to run at higher rpms. A higher rpm engine equals more fuel being sprayed per mile vs a lower rpm engine, so that negated some of the potential gains from the engine revisions.

The 8-speed auto transmission is the other half of that equation. More gears equals less rpm drop during every upshift, which keeps the engine in its powerband and running cleaner. The previous 5-speed would allow the current engines rpms to drop too low, which would cause the engine to lug its way back up to the powerband. Lugging burns more fuel and it burns dirtier.
They should have looked closer at the Cam and valve train. Seems like its a time bomb waiting til you get it paid off and boom.

Supposedly, Jeep addressed the rocker issue back in the JK era. At least that's what I've read, as I didn't get into Jeeps until the JL was being launched.

I wouldn't personally call it a ticking time bomb. I only mention the 2016 revisions to counter the "tried and true" comments that typically go hand in hand with the "unproven" comments abouts the 2.0 engine. Both were put into use in 2016, and so far, both have been holding their own overall.

Saw this thread got bumped so thought I would report back. I ended up with the 2.0L. It was too much fun to drive and the lure of the extra mpg was undeniable...
So far, LOVE IT, it's my 5th Wrangler and none of the others have been nearly as fun to drive. Seems like I never have to put gas in it (but I think that's just because of my other Wranglers and their poor mileage :)

Thanks for the update.

And if I might add: Told ya so.

Did you do a write up of your test drives and thoughts that led to your decision?

Lol, it only took a single 5 minute test drive and I was in the office working out a deal......
I just did my first longish trip (Prescott to San Diego, 400 miles) and this new Jeep made it a much easier trip.....passing trucks and all that became the most noticeable difference. Even going up hills....

I have the 3.6 and the manual that said, the 2.0 has proven reliable.
With a small displacement forced induction engine you should change your oil often and use high quality oil. Why? Because LSPI.

OP I'm curious if you drove both or just the 2.0T and loved it? I just test drove both back to back on some local roads and then on the highway to figure out which engine to order for a 2024 Willys. I really wanted to like the 2.0T, but it didn't feel peppier, quicker, more powerful than the 3.6L which surprised me given all the feedback here and elsewhere. My brother has a 2.0T JLUR that he loves.

It was immediately obvious to me when I switched to the 3.6L that it would be my choice. Felt smoother, more torque, and sounded far better. When I got on it, it seemed to have more power than the 2.0T, but who knows. I'll be ordering the 3.6L 6sp manual Willys.

Was the gearing equivalent?

Not sure - the 2.0T was a Sahara while the 3.6L was a Rubicon. I think the 2024 Willys has a 4.10 so closer to the 2023 Rubicon?

@RAD1 This time I just drove the 2.0. I have had a couple of the 3.6 (Pentastars) and when I drove this new engine it was all over for me...

I had the same experience, to me the 2.0 has an uneven powerband, some superficial surges but not quicker...the 3.6 was smoother and sounded better but that's not saying much, neither speaks to the soul in that respect.

BTW, Congrats on your new Jeep. At elevation, the 2.0T may very well be the better choice. For me (at sea level), the 3.6L is what I will order. Of course, that's coming from someone who's daily driving a 4.7L V8 Land Cruiser with Magnaflow exhaust. :)

get the etorque, it makes all the difference before the v6 get to the torque band. At speed I cannot feel the difference in acceleration. I test drove a 2.0t sahara.

I just don't like turbo engines in general, they run at higher load and oil should continuously lube the turbo, engine start stop is a no go in my opinion.

if I drive like a granny I still get 24mpg in pure city driving,

I don't have much to say about sound, 3.6 sounds sweet around 4-5k.
