That area is the most frustrating thing about the install. It only goes one way but it seems like you have it at first (with a shitty fit) and then if you try & try & try and then it just goes in. Yes, better instructions would help. A video on their site would be awesome. Glad you got it fixed.So I am a little embarrassed to admit the reason for the gap was 1000% user error. I put that piece pictured above on wrong. I had them flipped (passenger on driver's side and vice versa). I swapped them tonight and viola:

I was likely tired after hours of work on these and countless swear words. This was literally the last step of the installation.

This also just goes to show how awful the instructions are. Additionally there was no indication of which was which. So word to the wise if you stumble across this forum when doing your own install, once you decipher where things go take some extra time to figure out how the pieces fit together, it's not always apparent with these instructions.
