Today was 68*F outside and I set the climate control temp to 73* with the fan speed on two and did not experience a measurable loss of electric range. I monitored the battery use using the built-in "Hybrid Electric" Uconnect app. Interestingly, the Climate kW was 0 for most of the 25 mile drive. There was a point where the Climate kW changed 1 which happened when the outside temperature dropped to 66*F (for maybe a mile).

So a 5*F difference between cabin and outside temps did not reduce EV range, and displayed zero impact according to the Hybrid Electric Uconnect app. An 8*F temperature difference displayed 1kW.

So what is the advice from those that have gone through "real winters" of what the best startup procedures are on a morning well below freezing. If you have remote start (cold weather package) is it best to use it and will it start the ICE or just electric heater/s if the vehicle is plugged in?

Is the battery heated when it gets real cold?

I am pretty sure it always started up in electric last winter, but when it was below freezing, I started firing up the ICE by hitting e-save.

I live in a condo, so I cannot really use remote start, I also do not have a home charger, so I balance using electric vs gas differently than most people.

But if you are plugged in just hit remote start and let the Wrangler do it's thing, it will recharge using the wall so you should be at 99% when ready

If you know you will run out of electric charge at some point in the trip, I would fire up the ICE to get it warmed up also, and then just drive it in Hybrid.

Thank you @BXFXJeep. It will be plugged in every evening and outside rain, snow, sleet or hail. I will find out on my own of course but just interested to know what exactly it would do (what it's "thing" is ;) 1) if I hit remote start 15 minutes before going out and 2) If I don't.

I agree with you in general and without the cold if I know my trip is going to exceed the battery range I let the ICE warm up early but usually at moderate fuel efficient speeds rather than the initial stop and go in my neighborhood. In extreme cold not sure whether better to warm up the ICE right away or whether that is even possible through remote start. Have not yet had the opportunity to see what remote start does below freezing.

I hope everyone enjoys their 4xE, but for me it would be to much math. ?
I would be so focused on mpg savings and charge staus that it would take half the fun of ownership.
I'd be pissed at the gas station or at the other end worry that my gas is getting stale.

Watch his videos he tend to answer many questions about the 4xe, and if he makes the odd mistake, he corrects in a later follow up when he realized, think he only made one minor mistake. He lives in a place that gets winter, I think Ohio.

He also had an issue with his 4xe and he walks through how he got it fixed etc.

One thing to be careful about is scheduling, not sure how that works if you start up at 8am to warm up, but 8am is outside your schedule, so you might not recharge while warming up, I don't know, I don't use scheduling.

Get ready for a long winter…. In the Midwest my old Kia Soul EV would get ~110 miles on full charge in midsummer but only 60-65 in midwinter. Best thing I found was to preheat the engine/cabin while still plugged in and then limit heater as much as possible and use heated steering/seats as much as possible. It was very annoying but at least the 4xe has backup gas - didn’t have that in Kia
