I just rewatched this movie (the first one) and was scratching my head about the choice of Ford Explorer as the rugged transportation vehicles at the park. Wranglers seem like a much more appropriate choice, especially the rainstorm and mud scene where Newman is using the winch to pull himself out of a ditch. Was this just a Ford product placement deal? Lol just an observation ? I’d love to see a wrangler with Jurassic Park branding on it!

I think the is talking about the ones that 'ride the rails' on the tour.

I think they chose the Explorer for this role as there was no where to stash the night-vision goggle in a Wrangler ????

It's roomier insider it too so it probably helped with all the movement they did on the inside and I would think that making a safari style top to do the stunts was easier too.

My ‘94 Sahara was Pearlstone - the color of the Jurassic Park Wranglers. The dealership had outfit it just like them with winch, light bar, etc. just didn’t have the red accents. Miss that Jeep. There are a lot of TJ replicas, but realistically they should be YJs.

At that speed their Firestone tires wouldn't explode and kill all the passengers.

You’re all correct, clearly I only rewatched part of the movie lol. And the Wrangler was a YJ with rectangular headlights too ?

In the novel, the tour vehicles were Toyota Land Cruisers. Which at least have a bit more off-road cred than the Ford Exploders. ? But... then again... the tour vehicles were never intended to actually go off road, just stick to their preprogramed tracks. And even then, in both the book and film, they were buggy and unreliable. Ford seems like a good fit for that ;)

Obligatory pic of the Jurassic Jeep recreation I saw at the grocery store one night:
