Let’s not doomsday it yet. Let’s hold out hope.

Now as for the 4.0 from the old days:

It was an ok engine. Never had much power, but it ran. Might not run as well at 200k, but it runs.
The only time I’m not ok with the 4.0 is at highway speeds at elevation. It is not happy at 11,000 feet on I-70 trying to go above 55mph
I do believe it is possible to make an new style I-6 with forced air that would meet all the new regs and have as adequate power curve.

We just need to have speculating.
Just sold my 2003 TJ with 4.0 /5spd and you're right, going up I-70 through the Ike was not fun. It just didn't have enough power. Now mine had 173,000 miles on it, but it ran great otherwise. With another person, two dogs and some gear it really struggled getting up that hill, occasionally had to hit 2nd gear to get her up to speed again.

My 2.0T JLU feels like it has 3x the power :)

The future is not with an inline 6. We were already going down the path of electrification....something that will only accelerate following this weeks election.

I guess it is a matter of personal preference, I have had 3 4.0L I6 with manual transmissions in wrangles and one with an automatic in a Cherokee and I had one 3.6 V6 in a wrangler with auto. I drove all of the from the mountains of Maine, the Carolina's and Virginia to the beaches of Florida and Texas and I would much rather have the straight 6 over the V6. I currently have the 2.0T without etorque and it reminds me of the low end torque of the straight 6 but with added power on the freeway. If they were to come out with an I6 turbo I would probably take on for a spin. I love diesels but just don't like the up front weight.

Good God, I hope not. The only thing Electric, that I am going to drive will be a golf cart, when I retire.
Also, just name one Socialist country that had gone electric.

As mentioned above, investing in a ICE , when many countries are banning their use in 2030, to say nothing of states, such as California, doesn't make business sense. ...
Thinking that ICE are going to vanish in the next couple decades is delusional. These companies need to remain profitable for lots more years while people get over the fairy tale of what electrics can do, and what their total cost is.

Compact forced induction engines are going to be around longer than most of us are likely to live. The convenience and energy density of liquid fuel is hard to beat.

Spot on. In terms of efficiency, manufacturing efficiency that is, with four-cylinder engines so prevalent, if you’re going to do a six cylinder engine it’s easier to just add two cylinders in a line then to build a V configuration on a different assembly line. BMW and Mercedes and several other companies are doing this already. In-line four and six on the same assembly line.

thats why i picked up my 6speed at the end of 2018. i do not want to see the price of one of the 8 or 10 speed throw away transmissions. when they fail. the amount of shifting they make those things do is crazy.

I’m all for another inline I6. The 4.0 was bulletproof and I’ve had very good reliability with a couple VW inline I4 2.0 and the weird I5 2.5,
