I'm considering purchasing the new torq locker for the front end of my Willy's. I would love to hear from those of you who have already did this mod and hear some pro's and con's.

I have a few questions:

1. My Jeep is my daily driver and I do have to drive on slick/snow packed roads from time to time in the Winter. How does it handle icy road conditions in 4 hi?

2. Was your turning radius in 4 wheel drive impacted at all? I'm referring to trail riding, not the highway stuff in question #1.

3. Did it impact your MPG at all? I know that sounds odd, but on this forum, or perhaps another, someone said it did. Not sure why with the
FAD.

4. How bad is the clicking when making tight turns?

Please feel free to add your Pro's, Con's or general experience.

Thanks.

1. It's something you will need to adjust to and be conscious of. Going straight will be fine. Making turns under power you will have some understeer. Possibly sudden and abrupt understeer if it engages mid-turn. Better to coast through turns if possible.

2. Turning radius with front locked/rear open is better than front open/rear locked but not as good as open/open.

3. I would imagine the locker is set up to be engaged in 2wd mode to prevent it from ratcheting while driving down the road. And in that case, your differential and driveshaft will be turning. With the stock diff, only one axle shaft and spider gears will spin.

4. If my #3 assumption is true then it won't make any noise in 2wd mode, or at least very rarely make noise. Making turns in 4wd will click a lot.

Every trim level of every wrangler since 2007 has BLD. It’s way better than an LSD for wheeling but can’t do some important things that a real locker can. Like sticking one of your front tires against the face of a big rock and climbing up it.

Yea I'm assuming that OP has wheeled his jeep and has found the limit of BLD. If not, he should certainly explore that before spending money on lockers of any type.

Your assumption is correct. I've been wheeling since old enough to see over the dash setting next to my dad in old pickups. LOL.

I have LSD in rear (which despite some opinions on these forums, work really well and I've always had good luck with them). BLD is ok and better than open diff, but its not perfect. I do a lot of my 4 wheel drive in the snow, mud or climbing steep hills. I would say "real world" off roading vs Moab type stuff.

The reason I want a locker in the front is mainly for getting out of mud/snow/sand. I do a lot of exploring in very remote areas (mountains/canyons) and getting unstuck can literally be a life saver.

I've did fine all these years without a locker in the front, but there have been numerous times where I really wished I had one. Would have made getting unstuck a hell lot easier.

I'm on the fence for now and would really like to hear opinions from folks who have installed the new Torq Locker on their JL.

Very true, BLD can be counter productive in sloppy stuff.

TEXGOAT,

I understand where your coming from and I would love to have ARB's or e-lockers, but I'm not willing to spend the money.

These new Torq Lockers are supposed to be "unnoticeable" while in 2 wheel drive. They have a YouTube video demonstrating them and I was really impressed. Just search Torq Locker JL Wrangler on YouTube. Sorry, I would post a link but can't right now.

I was really hoping someone who has them installed would have responded to this thread. Perhaps tomorrow.

I have it, i notice it when turning, but i have the one piece rcv axles so it makes everything spin, it would be less noticeable with the stock two piece design. Locker has worked wonderful for me and id reccomend it. Takes a bit to get used to the click/vibration when fast turning(if you even get it with 2 piece) but i have not changed my driving habits at all and i drive 70 miles a day
