He does a great job of dissecting engines on his YouTube channel. Great sense of humor, too.

Except for it being the exact same engine
It was a significant redesign, but retained the basic architecture. The PUG, or newer gen Pentastar design focused on reduced friction and weight. So I believe even the block was changed. It is very similar, but not the same. Like twins, but not identical.

Crazy how similar it is to the Maserati engine. Obviously it uses the same block casting and some other minor parts.

Raises the question of who designed the Pentastar, or how much help did Chrysler get with it? At first I though it was inherited from the Mercedes days, but MB V6s only share some very basic design elements and no parts with the Pentastar. Seems more of a Fiat engine from the get go or a simplified version (no direct injection and no forced induction) of the engine that was initially meant for the Masserati.

That same basic Pentastar block and head castings are sent to Ferrari for final machine work and assembly when used in Maseratis. My only real curiosity now is whether or not the Maserati 3.0 oil filter housing will fit on a Pentastar.

Watch this comparison between the Pentastar and Maserati - some of the parts are a very close fit while other parts do fit. Great video, too.

My two cents, I think he emphasis what is the wrong reason for the failure. To me, If I walked up to that motor, something stopped the pistons from moving, as in, hydrolock. Everything else is a result of that. Pistons being sideways, rods being broken. Bearings burning for the last final rotations without oil from the other cylinders failures.

I'd say the engine took in some water. Did he ever say why?
