All Jeep and Chrysler Plug-In Hybrid Models Are Officially Dead: Exclusive

This does not impact future range-extended electric models, the company told us.

Just a few years ago, Jeep touted the Wrangler 4xe as the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America, and the herald of a new electrification strategy. Today it’s dead, along with every other plug-in model Stellantis sells in the United States.

You read that correctly: Jeep and Chrysler have officially discontinued production of their respective plug-in hybrid models. As of the end of the 2025 model year, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Chrysler Pacifica PHEV have all officially been discontinued—not paused or back-burnered. Just donezo.

“Stellantis continually evaluates its product strategy to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory requirements,” a Stellantis spokesperson told The Drive via email. “With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs.”

“This approach reinforces the company’s commitment to offering advanced propulsion systems that maximize efficiency and provide options from internal combustion to hybrid range‑extended, and fully electric solutions,” the spokesperson continued.

On a tip from a reader, The Drive reported Monday that the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xes had both disappeared from their respective “Build and Price” tools on Jeep’s website. After our story was originally published, a Jeep spokesperson confirmed that an active stop-sale remained in place on all 4xe models due to ongoing recall campaigns, but stopped short of addressing their absence from the website itself. Now we know why they vanished.

This signals a firm pivot away from existing plug-in hybrid architectures across the company’s U.S. portfolio. Going forward, the company will focus its electrification efforts on range-extended EVs and conventional series hybrids. This means the range-extended Ram EV (and any unannounced products riding on the same architecture) remain in the pipeline.

Kind of explains the delay on the 4xe Gladiator.

I wonder if one of the reasons could be lack of engineering resources? It'll be interesting to see this year's concept vehicles at EJS in March, they have been pushing the 4xe as a starting platform for years.

I had read they had taken the 4xe builds off of the official website. I guess this is why.

The article says focusing in on hybrid and range extended vehicles? Does that mean just a non plug in hybrid like Toyota does with the Prius?

Wouldn't this mean that no new Wranglers could be sold in California? If I am correct, they banned the sale of the ICE Wrangler. And since there is no full EV Wrangler currently, then that would result in no new Wranglers on the lot...right?

I live in Cali. You can buy ICE Wranglers here. Honestly, I see a bunch of them on the lot, but haven't seen a 4xe on a dealer lot in a while.

I am waiting for something actually official from Stellantis but this does seem very likely.

Tbh it was the stupidest idea to begin with. Oooo 20 miles whoopie! They should be able to be more efficient with their cost structure now with fewer parts and batch changes, so hopefully that helps keep pricing from increasing.

That was pretty comparable to many of the PHEVs at the time when it was released. Now, you might say the whole concept of a PHEV is dumb.....

They have the recon and Wagoneer S and a new hybrid Cherokee. That might satisfy what they are trying to do.

Oh it is. Would have made more sense to do a regular non plug in hybrid IMO.

There was like a 2-year period where the only wrangler a dealer could order for lot stock was a 4XE in all CARB states. Hasn't been the case for over a year now.

There are like, what, 350k of them out there? I am sure you will have plenty of work for a while.

My wife bought her 4xE in 2024 and loves it. She has an appointment at the end of the month to do the 68C recall battery test. She has a Sport S, and uses it for work and a grocery getter. 20 miles of range was excellent. That was enough to cover 3/4 of her daily commute.

It would be nice if Jeep came out with a PHEV delete kit of some kind. The resale value of this car is now a little better than hot garbage.
