The wife’s JL has that SiriusXM connect or whatever it’s called now. It hasn’t been active in over a year. Yesterday morning her check engine light came on, shortly after she received an email that the light came on. Kinda creepy but what ever. It is what it is. She’s not about to sell it because of some big brother nonsense.
the problem isnt that this is an issue with jeep; its an issue with every new vehicle.

I was just going to say that. You will be hard pressed to find a new car from any manufacturer that isn't somehow connected.

You're right my NPC friend. what was I thinking!

everything about jeep is perfect. we must never taunt jeep. we must always think its great. Any flaws are actually the drivers flaws.
I had to ask my kid what NPC meant. You are definitely hip with it.

Every Jeep with SiriusXM and more importantly, the satellite receiver module is capable of receiving data from either/or the Guardian system and the cellular data provider AT&T. Regardless of whether you are utilizing the features of Guardian or SXM (paid/free period), the system is capable of pushing updates for the UConnect system. It's part of the connected car world we now live in.

I haven't replaced the head unit with an aftermarket, but that might resolve anyone's concern about Big Corporate monitoring your vehicle. Someone with more experience with that end of things may have an answer.

Otherwise, if you want to prevent your Jeep from talking about you to strangers there are options. One that I know works are sheets of Faraday material which can be placed around the three transmitters which do a pretty good job of ruining Big Corporate's World Domination Plans (TM) by learning how many times you visit Big Bob's Waffles and Small Arms Cafe.

Some faraday shields are better than others. This brand works well, but even leaving the phones charging wire out allows it to work as an antenna so wrapping will decrease range but not totally eliminate it.

It is true that you can send data other than music over siriusxm, but I don't necessarily think they're going to waste their bandwidth on it.

The radio does have a cellular modem built into it. On the 2018-2023 jeeps it was hit-or-miss whether that was built into the radio or a separate 'telematics module' (and the vast majority of the time, only the 8.4" screen systems supported it anyway.) But of course, the 2024 is different. I'm not sure what they used there so, no idea if you can disconnect it.

I've been wanting to do something about the 8.4" in my 2020 because it randomly pops up full screen advertisements for siriusxm and uconnect guardian.

And yea, these car companies can't be trusted to not sell data about you to the insurance companies.

I didn't imply there was anything bad about asking questions, even basic ones. This is a safe space for questions.

Dude, you are like the master of snark with plausible deniability. I'd ask you to teach me your ways, but I wouldn't want to be rude.

You are off by several years on external wifi but i dont think this is a wifi situation. Im willing to bet theres a sim chip in the telemetry device which basically makes your jeep a cell phone.

You seem very happy being tracked and not in control of your jeep. Good luck!
100% this.

You can essentially buy lifetime connectivity on a network for a device. The price will depend on how long you want access, how much data it will use, and how often it will connect. Price ranges from a few bucks to a few hundred.

This is how cars can be updated, tracked, etc. without any sort of input from the owner.

I am not sure of the tech inside radio in my month old 24, but I did get email, and snail mail to sign up the the hotspot using ATT, IOW, it has a cell phone inside it. Pretty sure anyway. With phone bluetooth wifi off, nav still gets gas pricing and traffic info.

The power plug for the telematics unit is the big gray plug that you see disconnected. The unit is just to the right of the steering column. I don’t know if that box has the SIM card or if it’s the radio. A little more research will be done later on…
